Mary Kom came quite close to the kind of expectations that one had from it on the eve of release. Yes, though one expected 50%-60% start for the film, the footfalls were slightly lesser at around the 40% mark. Still, considering the kind of huge release that the film got, there was substantial moolah that came in. It was a given, though, that the collections would be strongest at the premium multiplexes of the major cities and that was actually the case too as single screens didn’t quite lend an enthusiastic response. Still, the film had a decent enough first day, hence promising a good weekend ahead.

This is what happened as the Priyanka Chopra starrer managed to fetch a weekend of around 28 crore which is a good number indeed, considering the fact that she was the only notable face that was being used for the film’s promotion. The reviews too ranged from being above average to good which meant good news for Mary Kom as word of mouth too was in a similar range.

Having said that, the film wasn’t quite praised to the sky on the same lines as a Bhaag Milkha Bhaag or a Chak De! India. Though not many people are calling the film a bad one, it isn’t being hailed as an extra ordinary affair either. Now this is the factor that would come in the way of this Omung Kumar directed film to enter the 100 crore club. Still, while it is now a given that the 50 crore mark would be comfortably crossed, it will be interesting to see how close it comes to the collections of other heroine-driven films like Queen (Kangana Ranaut) and Kahaani (Vidya Balan), both of which just about crossed the 60 crore mark.
