“The trick is to keep your look simple and fresh,” says the gorgeous actress Sonal Chauhan when she sits down to share some skin and hair care tips for Diwali.

Having starred in films like Jannat with Emraan Hashmi and 3G with Neil Nitin Mukesh, Sonal is considered one of Bollywood’s more beautiful women with a peaches and cream complexion and silky, soft hair. “It doesn’t take too much to look good but you must practice certain beauty rituals everyday to have a glowing skin and great head of hair,” she reveals.

In an exclusive interview with Team MissMalini, Sonal explains her beauty regimen and goes on to explain that, “Not only will your skin and hair look good for Diwali, but all the year round as well!”

SKIN CARE

* Make sure you drink a lot of water in the days leading up to Diwali. This flushes out impurities from your body and even when you are partying hard, the heavy and oily food and alcohol will make your skin look less than perfect. So drink lots of water between alcoholic drinks and even before meals, so that you eat less of the heavy food.

* Hydrate your skin with a moisturizer. This is one of the most important things I follow to ensure a good skin. The smoke in the air from crackers will create havoc for your skin. So protect it with a good mositurizer.

* I always apply a good sunscreen whenever I step out of my house – preferably a water based one. So don’t forget to slather some on when you go shopping for your Diwali outfits and gifts.

* Diwali is undoubtedly a stressful time. Either you’re hosting a party or you’re attending a party – all the preparations can be stressful. The point is to prepare well in advance and not leave things to the last moment, so that you are under minimal stress on D-Day itself. Stress causes a lot of visible damage to the skin.

*  I have a diet filled with fruit salads and high fiber food. This helps keep my skin looking fresh all the year round.

* And finally, make it a point to apply Apple Cider Vinegar on your face every night before going to bed for truly glowing skin.

HAIR CARE

* Always oil your hair a few hours before you shampoo it. This technique hydrates and cleanses your hair. So if you’re going for a Diwali party at night, oil your hair in the afternoon so that it looks bouncy and silky when you step out.

* Personally, I try to stay away from hair products. It can be very damaging if it does not suit me. The point here is to keep it simple. Don’t go overboard using products in your hair. A simple method of oiling, shampooing and drying your hair out naturally will make it look healthy.

* I drink a lot of coconut water because it’s known for its healing and medicinal purposes and rejuvenates hair growth. You may want to try it out too, on a daily basis.

* If you’re not a vegetarian, make it a point to eat a lot of salmon. The oils in salmon are very good for the hair.

* If you have time before you head out for the card parties, work-out for at least an hour. I find that a religious work-out makes me work up a sweat and this in turn clears all the impurities from my scalp.

* And finally, while doing that all important Diwali cleaning, always tie a bandana to avoid dust and dirt falling into your hair and making it dirty.
