Bollywood has given us a song for each sentiment, a scene for each feeling and a sequence for each festival. However, you’d be surprised at how little importance Diwali has received on celluloid over all these years. Rack your brains! For every 5 Holi songs that come to your head, there’d probably be about one Diwali moment onscreen. As much competition as there is between the Diwali releases every year, there are very few movies that have incorporated Diwali in any  way in their plot.

Well, why fear when we are here? We’ve listed out for you 5 iconic Diwali moments from Bollywood for you…because we know all you guys are #ProudDesis!

1. Chahchi 420

Chachi 420

One of the best Hollywood rip offs that we have managed! Kamal Hassan‘s Chachi 420 was the desi rip off Robbie William‘s Mrs. Doubtfire. When Chachi goes to Durgaprasad Bhardwaj’s house for a job as Bharti’s governess, she rescues Bharti from an unfortunate firecracker incident by throwing her in the pool and bags the job. Moral of the story? ‘Can throw people in water when required’ should be a new addition to your CV!

2. Vaastav

Vaastav tells the story of young boy who dramatically rises as the local mafia. The film is one of Sanjay Dutt‘s most lauded performances ever. In a remorseful depiction of Diwali, the film showcases Sanjay’s character Raghu return home on Diwali as an accomplished underworld don. It’s obviously been portrayed as a foil to the mythical Lord Ram’s return to Ayodhya after triumphing over evil.  May not be the most festive moment, but it remains a scene that’s strongly etched in memory.

3. Home Delivery

Home Delivery was made at a time when Vivek Oberoi was touted as the next big thing. (Lol) The plot of this dud film actually revolved around Diwali! The film may have been insignificant but the soundtrack by Vishal-Shekher was well received. Also, it gave us our favourite Diwali song…

4. Mohabbatein

Trust Yash Raj to always nail the #TooManyFeels department. Everything is larger than life at Yash Raj and so is Diwali! The Pairon Mein Bandhan song from Mohabattein is the big union song of the leads as all the love confessions and family confrontations have happened by then. So what do you do when all works out in your favour? Wear skimpy cholis and dance on Diwali is what!

5. Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham

The mother of all Bollywood Diwali moments has to be Jaya Bachchan‘s eerily knowing when Shah Rukh Khan returns home in his helicopter. Stuff dreams are made of! Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham‘s title track is a Diwali sequence and probably the most obvious choice for this list! Of course, it was the sound of the helicopter that gets Jaya to know of her son’s homecoming, but let’s give all the credit to ma ki mamta here for impact.
