There was a time in the ’70s when Amitabh Bachchan was forever being an angry young man and Dharmendra was happy to beat the pulp out of villains. In the ’80s, Mithun Chakraborty and Govinda were dancing away to glory while Anil Kapoor ruled the ‘masala‘ genre. Then came the ’90s and the three Khans as well as Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn found their ‘zone’, which has kept them running strong for a quarter of a century now.

Did they ever experiment? Well yes, but only on and off. However, the trend is changing with the younger lot today with each one of them trying to explore an unknown territory. Arjun Kapoor, Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra have picked up the mantle and are bringing on the competition by playing across different genres.

Have a look!

Arjun Kapoor

Releases so far: Ishaqzaade (romantic musical), Aurangzeb (family social), Gunday (action drama), 2 States (romantic musical), Finding Fanny (quirky comedy)
Coming next: Tevar (action drama romance)

Each of his five releases has been different from each other so far, though one has to admit that Arjun has managed to create his own style that is a common thread amongst these films, despite different genres. However, his biggest experiment till date is Finding Fanny, which isn’t quintessentially Bollywood. Soon, he would be heading for ‘masala’ with vengeance in Tevar.

Varun Dhawan

Releases so far: Student of the Year (romcom musical), Main Tera Hero (romcom), Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya (romcom)
Coming next: Badlapur (dramatic thriller)

He has been doing well as a chocolate boy who plays naughty with his girls and still goes scot-free. A hat-trick of successes behind him is pretty much a testimony to this. However, he has decided to experiment, proven by the fact that he will be acting under the direction of none other than Sriram Raghavan, whose credits include films like Ek Haseena Thi and Johny Gaddaar. The wait is on for Badlapur.

Sidharth Malhotra

Releases so far: Student of the Year (romcom musical), Hasee Toh Phasee (romcom drama), Ek Villain (action drama)
Coming next: Brothers (action drama)

Sidharth has shown right from the beginning of his career that he won’t be caught under the maze of romantic musical space despite Karan Johar giving him a hit in this genre. His inclination towards drama has been visible in his journey so far and now that he is pairing up with Akshay Kumar for Brothers, it is clear that he is distancing himself from campus affairs for good. Right move, this!
