It’s commonly known fact that the Indian Film Industry’s makeup artists have historically and predominantly been men. But it’s shocking to learn that until today, discriminating and banning women from doing makeup for TV & Film was totally allowed! The Indian SC (Supreme Court) has just announced that it has lifted any such ban from ever taking place again. They stated that harassing women in the 21st century is “ inconceivable and impermissible.” The Cine Costume and Makeup Artists Association is also being made to ban mandatory provisions that state: ‘a makeup artist has to be a resident of Maharashtra for 5 years to become a registered makeup artist and hair-dresser in Bollywood.’ Although this may not be the most pressing issue for discrimination and women’s rights in India, or the world over, it’s definitely a baby step.
The immensely popular, celebrity makeup artist, Charu Khurana has been fighting for this hearing since 2009 and believes this is a win for woman empowerment!
