We’re always being bombarded with information on dark circles: homemade remedies, dermatologists advice, makeup coverups and the list goes on. Let me guess, it doesn’t always work? What if I told you it’s all because you may not know what exactly you’re treating? Yes, you heard me right. Not all dark circles are created equal. The first step is to figure out exactly what your problem is.

1) Hyper-pigmentation

These are the kind of dark circles that refuse to leave no matter what you do. They’re usually green-blue or pink-purple in color and are darker than the general type of dark circles. Unfortunately, desi women are prone to hyper-pigmentation under the eye as it’s often genetic.

The Test: If you press down your skin and your dark circles remain just as dark.

Solution: You might want to confirm with your dermatologists whether this actually is pigmentation and he or she can prescribe you creams that help bleach the area. Of course, you can’t just use any bleach because the under eye area is very sensitive. You can also consult your doctor for lasers and peels that significantly reduce the appearance of hyper-pigmentation. I find that this is usually the most effective solution.

Product: Use a sunscreen right up to your lash line to avoid sun exposure which is the main cause for hyper-pigmentation along with a spot fading treatment, such as Olay Pro X Even Skin Tone.

2) Hollow Eyes

This is caused by naturally hollow eyes, which can often appear as a shadow, giving the impression of dark circles.

The Test: Feel your under eye area. Does it seem slightly sunken in compared to the rest of your face? Well, then you’ve got hollows.

Solution: You might want to talk to your dermatologist about a permanent solution like hyaluronic acid fillers.

3) Blood Vessels

This is usually known as tired eyes. Your thinning skin is allowing your blood vessels to show through.

The Test: Press down on the skin. If your dark circles lighten, then it’s probably because of thinning skin.

Solution: Again, you want to plump up your skin and keep it looking younger. Make sure you sleep well and apply a retinol rich cream.

4) Puffy Eyes

Puffed up under eyes look tired and can wear your entire face down. You don’t want to go for the I’ve-been-crying-all-night look.

The Test: Your under eye feels like it’s swollen.

Solution: Sleep on a double pillow so you drain all the excess liquid downwards. Apply cold compresses like cucumbers, ice, cold spoons, or tea bags for detox. Avoid extra salt and alcohol in your diet.

Unfortunately, there is no particular product you can use to get rid of this, but if the problem is persistent, then you may want to visit a dermatologist.

The first step to better skin is figuring out exactly what the problem is. That’s exactly why I decided to put together this guide. But it’s important to remember that a healthy diet and lifestyle will really make a difference to under eyes issues and skin struggles in general.
