All predictions failed when it came to the box office opening of Happy Ending. Given the cool look of the promos as well as reasonably entertaining songs, it was expected that at the bare minimum, the film would have a 30 crore opening for itself. However, what one instead witnessed were numbers that were way below that. With around 15 crore* coming in over the weekend, the film has thrown a commercial shocker.
What is all the more surprising is the fact that the pre-release buzz had seemed good, especially since Saif Ali Khan was returning in the ‘zone’ where he is loved most. The audience didn’t seem to take much note of that though, as was reflected in the opening that was decent only in select multiplexes of the country. Even though the film seemed to do reasonably well critically, what with quite a few positive and encouraging reviews coming its way, it didn’t receive the same response in the footfalls.
The film has a week ahead for itself and there is a possibility of some word of mouth coming into play. However, for that, the collections would have to be super strong on practically every day of the week. As for the opening, it will always be a mystery as to why it was so low. Happy Ending will probably be that one film in 2014 that deserved at least double the collections of what it would eventually get.
