I love Denim! I mean who doesn’t? For me, my jeans are an absolute staple. If I can’t think of anything to wear, my hand reaches out for a pair of jeans and a basic tee. However, sometimes I like mixing it up a bit. Instead of a tee, I like wearing my denim shirt. Denim on denim, as with all things in fashion, was a once fabled faux pas and has now evolved into a chic sartorial trend. (Fashion is always recycling itself!)

I love the look of a head-to-toe denim ensemble. It can range anywhere from classic and all-American to edgy and eclectic. Personally, I’m a fan of pairing my basic blue jeans with a button up chambray shirt. The fun part is that the options are nearly endless when creating an all-denim outfit.

To get you in gear to give this look a try, I’ve come up with a couple of style tips that will have you mixing and matching denim and chambray like a professional in no time.

TWO TONED

One of the most important things to know about wearing denim head-to-toe is that your shades of blue don’t have to match. In fact, I think it keeps the look more interesting when lighter denim is paired with a darker wash. Throw on a pair of lighter boyfriend jeans, a basic tee and a darker denim jacket for a two-toned look that will actually appear fashionably put together.

DISTRESSED AND CLEAN CUT

Similar to trying a two-toned denim look, mixing distressed pieces with cleaner cuts is another way to rock the trend. Combine your go-to skinnies with a distressed chambray shirt or the other way around. These days I love buttoning by shirt all the way to the top and tucking the bottom in. It looks a bit vintage and quirky, and it’s a cool spin on this classic look.

ELEMENT OF SURPRISE

Don’t limit your style by thinking that denim pieces can only come in the form of basic tops and bottoms. Street fashion forecasts have shown everything from knee length blue jean pencil skirts to denim backpacks, totes and accessories. In cities where it does get a bit cold, I would suggest you make the most of the trend this season by layering a collared chambray shirt under a plaid sweater or throwing a denim vest over a sweater dress.

TIE IT AROUND YOUR WAIST

If you want to try something a little more on trend for this season, you can do double denim by tying a denim shirt around your waist so it falls over your skinny jeans or shorts, this works really well and it’s a great way to incorporate more denim into your look. This even works for dungarees or overalls, just tie the shirt around your waist and it creates a completely different energy. It’s sort of a throwback to the 90’s as those trends are coming back around, but in a more modern and updated way, it’s also much more muted and less overpowering.

So here are all my style tips on creating a fantastic double denim outfit; One that looks chic or stylish and not too overdone. Double denim can even be experimented with more by trying out prints or bright colours. You can wear denim in all different colours, as long as they go together, but you might want to stay away from the bold primary colours unless you know what you are doing.

These work for both the men and women and you can’t really go wrong when following these, you’re almost guaranteed to get it right.
