It’s no secret that Anushka Sharma often accompanies her beau Virat Kohli for most of his matches. The actress had flown down to Ahmedabad for Virat’s 26th birthday, which was followed by an India v/s Sri Lanka one-day match. And Anushka had also joined Virat at a special dinner hosted for the Indian cricket team by the Indian High Commission in Sydney, Australia. We’ve also witnessed the romantic moment when Virat blew a flying kiss to his ladylove after scoring a half century during one of his matches.
Naturally, everyone presumed that Virat will leave for the World Cup with Anushka in tow. But that’s not going to happen. According to the Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI), the wives and girlfriends (WAGS) will not be allowed to stay with Team India players during the World Cup, starting ironically on Valentine’s Day. Ouch! Says a spokesperson of BCCI, “This rule of not allowing wives and girlfriends was always there in the past. In a big tournament like the World Cup, the cricketers should stay away from distractions.”
While the families of the players are allowed to watch the matches and be present at the stadium, they are barred from hobnobbing with the players throughout the series. Talking about it, former cricketer Sourav Ganguly says, “What this team needs is rest. It has been a long tour and it’s time they meet their families before competing in the all-important World Cup. See, the reason I won’t compare someone like (Steve) Smith and (Virat) Kohli is because while Smith goes home to his girlfriend after each match, Kohli has to go from hotel to hotel.”
