Color cosmetics are always easier to buy because they leave so much room for experimentation. Sure, there’s the whole concept of picking colors according to your skin tone. They say some reds suit you better than other reds and the whole shebang. But really, color depends on your mood and whether you want to blend in or stand out! Unfortunately, when it comes to foundations, it ain’t so.

While BB Creams and CC Creams are moving towards technologies that adapt to different skin, basic foundation still doesn’t allow for too much color change. After all, it is supposed to look like second skin. And yes, foundations still offer the most amount of coverage. Here are 5 steps you can take to avoid looking like, well, this…

1) Never Test It On Your Wrist

Test it on the side of your cheek or your jawline. The color should match closest to this area.

2) Leave It On For A Bit

… or more. Preferably, you want to leave it on for about 20 to 30 minutes. Makeup often oxidizes and turns orange or a darker shade. Make sure the chemical composition of your foundation works well with your skin.

3) Sunlight!

The sales people can say what they want, don’t buy the product till you’ve seen what it looks like on your skin under sunlight. You’ll be shocked at the difference lighting can make.

4) Ask Lots Of Questions

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. What’s the difference between NC & NW? What’s the difference between 41 and 42. Why is a certain type of foundation better than another? What are you looking for? You aren’t just expected to know! While it’s good to do your research when it comes to makeup,  it’s always good to have someone who can guide you, as well.

5) Determine The Undertone Of Your Skin

It’s very important when it comes to choosing the right foundation. Here’s a quick guide on how you can figure out your skin’s undertone.

I might have left out one major step, but I only didn’t include it because at this point, it needs to be common sense: never opt for a color that you think will make you look whiter. There is no such thing. It will only make you look grey.

Try and check off as many points as you can the next time you go foundation shopping!
