It goes without saying that Karan Preet Kaur is fashion on legs. However, what sets this spunky 21 year old Australian Sikh apart, is her faith and fashion in one seamless 3 piece outfit.
Karan centres her outfit and accessories around her dastaar or turban, worn by baptised Sikhs. Think bright colour pops of yellow, royal blue or pink juxtaposed with leather jackets, floral scarfs and aviator shades.

Karan’s sartorial choices are on full display on her Instagram account Style With Kaur. At last count, she has close to 12,000 followers and 150 colourful editorial-esque “outfit of the day” (OOTD) style photos.
Team MissMalini caught up with this lovely lady and here are some excerpts from the interview:

1. What made you decide to wear the dastaar?

I was 16 years old when I started wearing a dastaar. It was honestly the best decision I could have ever made. My dastaar is something that is very sacred to me, and defines who I am and what I stand for.

2. How do the non-desi community react to your appearance?

It was quite easy for me to wear a dastaar to work and school. The non-desi community was actually very welcoming and understanding, perhaps because I took the initiative to educate them about the meaning and value of a dastaar to Sikhs. From my experience, the more you educate people, the more comfortable and accepting they become of your ‘differences’.

3. What message do you have for people who are struggling to retain their religious beliefs in a society which already has preconceived notions of a ‘beauty’ prototype?

I tell them to screw this ‘beauty’ prototype. You shouldn’t be a certain way just because the media portrays their notion of a ‘perfect’ woman. As cliché’ as it sounds, everyone is beautiful in their own skin – don’t try to be someone you’re not! At the end of the day what others think or what society thinks will not mean much. Trust me, when you start living your life for yourself; the feeling is so liberating and refreshing. Nothing will measure up and society will actually start respecting you for the person you have become.

Kudos to Karan for showing young women everywhere, that they do not have to conform to a set standard of beauty. Each and every individual is unique in her own, beautiful way.

You go, girl!
