Vivek Oberoi‘s career can be divided into two parts – pre-press conference and post it. You do remember THE press conference, right? Anyway, the actor has been honoured with The Dadasaheb Phalke Award – which is only the highest award in cinema in the country.
Veteran actor Shashi Kapoor‘s name was selected for this year Phalke awards, and industry’s stalwarts like Amitabh Bachchan, Gulzar, Pran, Manna Dey, Dev Anand, Hrishikesh Mukherjee have won this in the past. Last year, Jeetendra, Farhan Akhtar, Juhi Chawla, Sunidhi Chauhan and Kapil Sharma were conferred with this award. So you can understand my shock when I heard that Vivek is going to be a part of this list.
Now now, don’t get me wrong. I think Vivek is a brilliant actor and I, like a lot of you, crushed on him when he made his Bollywood debut with Company. I truly believed he was going to be the next big thing and his relationship with Aishwarya Rai (the same one that she always denied) was only going to be a catalyst in his growing career graph. However, the stars (of destiny and one in particular from Bollywood) had different plans for him and he got irrelevant over time.
I’m not saying Vivek doesn’t deserve “The Dadasaheb Phalke Film Foundation Phalke Pride Award 2015 for his excellence, dedication and versatility”, I’m just saying his last big release was Grand Masti.
I’m told The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is different from The Dadasaheb Phalke Film Foundation Phalke Pride Award and I really hope that is the case. If not, I don’t even know what to believe in anymore.
Drop a comment below and please tell me I’m not alone in feeling particularly disoriented with this news.
