Supandi and Shambu
Supandi and Shambu

Tinkle comics played a huge part in developing a reading habit in me, and how could it not? The world in these comics is so rich, so diverse and so funny that it’s a pity some kids now might not know about its existence! I know there have been a few additions here and there, but for me Tinkle will always remain special because of these iconic characters. So let’s take a trip down memory lane and appreciate these guys for making our childhood so much fun.

1) Suppandi

He made his debut in 1983, but Suppandi still rules our hearts! This village simpleton often causes problems for his ‘big city’ bosses with his virtue or plain stupidity, but he’s still one of the funniest comic characters Indian kids have ever read about!

See! He still evokes a chuckle. Suppandi is a star.

2) Shikari Shambu

Speaking about stars, it doesn’t get cooler than Shikari Shambu now, does it? This cowardly and lazy hunter, who with some stroke of luck manages to to end up as a hero is my spirit animal. The only difference is that I have no luck while he has lots of it!

Shambu is the flagship character of Tinkle Comics and my idol.

3) Kalia the crow

The one crow who basically saves the asses of the entire jungle time and again! Looks like we know where George R R Martin got the inspiration to write about ‘crows‘ protecting the wall eh?

Hence proved – Jon Snow is the Kalia of Westeros.

4) Tantri the Mantri

Tantri was so evil but such a fail! I loved him. All his plans to dethrone Raja Hooja would backfire, but Tantri would never give up. This my friends is called perseverance, learn it from the man!

Maybe Tantri just wanted democracy you guys! Ever thought of that? #TerrificTantri
