Tanu Weds Manu Returns has gotten a lot of praise from critics and audiences alike, but that doesn’t mean that someone – a critic, no less – is not allowed to express his honest views on the film. That’s why, recently, Mumbai Mirror received a lot of flak after they decided to upgrade their critic’s review. Rahul Desai, the critic in question, had given the movie 2.5 stars. But the next day, in a small corner of the paper, there was a note that the rating has been increased to 3.5 stars based on audience feedback and research. The Internet (especially Twitter) called out the paper for infringing upon the reviewer’s freedom of speech, and in a not-so-surprising turn of events, Rahul – who otherwise never commented on the subject – announced his resignation.
Appropriate that I resign as Mirror Critic on the day Bhaijaan teaser appears. Not always wise to adapt to changing systems, broken trust.
