When Kishore Kumar fan boy’ed over singer-actor K. L. Saigal and tried to emulate his singing style, little did he know that one day, his singing style will make him world famous one day! Kishore da commenced his filmy journey as a chorus singer at Bombay Talkies and the rest is history! Apart from being a playback singer, he was also a renowned actor, lyricist, composer, producer, director, screenplay writer and scriptwriter.
After his father’s death when Rahman was nine years old, the rental of his father’s musical equipment provided his family’s income. But this never deterred him from pursuing his dreams. He not only learned music but also made waves with his compositions and vocals. In fact, from Oscars to Grammy – Rahman has won many coveted awards and made us proud.
Usha Uthup started her singing career by performing at a small nightclub in Chennai called as Nine Gems in the basement of the a theatre complex. Back then, she was 20, and unlike most performers, she chose to go the traditional way and sported a saree and leg callipers! Her unique voice and personality fetched her a lot of appreciation and during one of her performances at the Oberoi hotels in Delhi, she was spotted by someone from the Indian film industry. His initial years in Mumbai proved to be a struggle, beginning by singing covers of Mohammed Rafi songs. He then began making radio commercials and also enacted in them. Not to mention, he has been later called to be the judge of many such singing shows.
Kailash Kher experimented with a family friend’s Indian handicraft export business till 1999 and then he battled depression as his business collapsed. That’s when he went to Singapore and Thailand, and stayed there for six months. Later, after he relocated to Delhi with his family, he graduated from Delhi University through the correspondence program. His career in music commenced much later, when he shifted to Mumbai. From singing for ad jingles to some obscure movies – Kher did it all before finding his foothold in the industry. When he croons Sufi numbers, he gives us goosebumps and he is undoubtedly, one of the most loved singers of Indian cinema today.
