Kathak maestro Birju Maharaj choreographed Deepika Padukone for her solo dance number in Bajirao Mastani titled Mohe Rang Do Lal. The song is an adaptation of one of Birju Maharaj’s own classic performances and it reportedly took 10 days to be shot. According to Mumbai Mirror, Sanjay Leela Bhansali wanted a fiery traditional Kathak recital for Mastani who is a warrior and a lover. The performance demanded more than just dance steps from the actress as the song tells an emotional tale. So to make it easier for Deepika to emote as a lover, Birju Maharaj told her this:
I told Deepika to think of Ranveer (Singh), who is her on screen lover, as her Kishore and like Madhubala had danced to his tunes in Jhumroo, she should dance the same way for her Bajirao.
Now that we know who Deepika thought of while she danced, we’re sure the dance is going to be EPIC!
