Divyanka Tripathi and Ssharad Malhotra

Divyanka Tripathi is the star of Yeh Hai Mohabbatein. The show saw unprecedented success this year but on the personal front, Divyanka broke up with her long-time boyfriend (9 years!) Ssharad Malhotra and chose to maintain silence about it. In an interview to Indian Express, Divyanka opens up about like post break-up for the first time.

Here’s what she said:

1. On Ssharad Malhotra…

I had a beautiful journey and a beautiful association. Even though I am an actor, by nature I am what you could call a homely girl. I had no life beyond one person and I made the choice of leading that life. It was not imposed by anyone. I was very happy in the zone. But somehow…(pauses) things fell apart. I was shocked and devastated.

2. On life post break-up…

After my break-up, shooting on sets was getting difficult. I was crying from within but I couldn’t show it while shooting. ‘Andar toofan tha’. I was falling ill too and even suffered a bout of food-poisoning. People around me started saying something is jinxed.

3. On when things turned around for her…

I was handling my fracture, my professional commitments and a lot of other things. Suddenly I realized that if I can take care of all these things, a break-up is no big deal.

4. On what she’s doing now…

I have bought this engagement ring for myself and I wear it to make myself happy. I went out on a solo dinner date yesterday. Divyanka always lived for others. Now she is enjoying some ‘me’ time and I have rediscovered a new, carefree and adventurous Divyanka.

5. On what she’s learnt from the relationship…

We must never lose our individuality. Also, never keep too many expectations.

6. On Ssharad’s parents…

I would love to keep a relation with them. I haven’t spoken to them but I really respect them a lot. I have a soft corner for his mother.

7. On being single…

In our society, single girls are not seen with much respect. It is very easy to point fingers at a single girl. It’s weird. On one hand, we talk about women empowerment but at times women themselves don’t support single women. I am single for the first time in many years and I have to be careful with who I am seen with or else it is easy for others to start gossiping just because I am single.

More power to you, Divyanka!
