When we think of red velvet, our mind often skips to the sinful cupcakes with a creamy frosting… but it won’t anymore! At New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2016, models for Jason Wu debuted matte red lips, with a twist. Not only were the lips bold, crisp and bright, but they also had a velvety finish to them. So pretty, right?

To achieve this trendy pout, makeup maven, Yadim (who is also Maybelline’s global makeup artist), mixed two shades of red liquid lipsticks together before painting them on. The specific colours are going to be a part of Maybelline’s Vivid Matte line, which has not yet launched. After this, he used a lip liner to exaggerate the Cupid’s bow. For a velvet-matte effect, he pressed on a dry, red pigment onto the lips.

How can YOU achieve this modern look? First, start with a clean base. Use a concealer to remove the redness from your skin, so that your crimson lip can really pop! Next, layer on two coats of a liquid lipstick like Revlon’s ColorStay Ultimate Liquid Lipstick in ‘Top Tomato.’ Don’t stress about the shine, as the powder will mattify it. Finally, use a lip brush to press on a pigmented powder, like MAC’s Pigment in ‘Basic Red’. If you don’t have a pigment within reach, feel free to use a brick red powder blush instead.

Expert tip: For a fuller pout, slightly overdraw your lips with a red lip pencil.
