I am not sure which smartass started this nonsense, but the silent treatment is really the most annoying and ineffective tool there is in a relationship. And I mean any relationship; I used to get damn pissed off as a child when my mum would decide to not speak to me for several hours as punishment. I grew up, started dating and woke up one day to the irritating realization that the phenomena of the silent treatment is never really going to leave my life.

I would like to take this opportunity to let you all in on a little secret – the silent treatment is the absolute worst.

Here’s why!

1. The Problem Persists

You know what you’re doing each time you give someone the silent treatment? You’re ignoring the problem at hand. It’s not healthy for you to go on in your relationship without expressing yourself. Whatever the issue is, it’s not going anywhere if you don’t deal with it.

2. Now What?

After you’ve had the smart decision to execute your silent treatment plan, ask yourself – “now what?” Your partner now doesn’t know what you were pissed off about and so he/she isn’t going to do anything about it. So now you’re angry, alone and no one knows what’s wrong with you. Congratulations.

3. You Can’t Do It Forever

Let’s face it – you can’t keep it up. How long are you going to not talk to this person who you’re supposed to be in a relationship with? What if you live with that person? And mutual friends? And you’re going to laugh! Come on!

4. It’s Childish

It is the most childish thing you can do. What is it you’re looking for? Attention?
Also, if you’re a married couple with kids, it sets a bad example for your children too. They’d think this is the way adults resolve problems.

5. You Might Not Get The Attention You’re Looking For

Also, can I be real for one second? Usually, the silent treatment happens post a big fight, right? I am just saying that someone you’ve just had a fight with might not even mind or notice the fact that you’re not talking to them for a while.

The point of this post is that you have to remember that while communication connects a couple, silence divides them. And it’s really not something you should use as a tool in your relationship. I’m glad Abhi and Ananya decided otherwise.

Check it out!
