Shaandaar
Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt in Shaandaar

It was predicted in this column that Shaandaar would take an opening of around 50% and not just cross the 10.1 crore total of Shahid Kapoor‘s biggest so far, R… Rajkumar, but also cross its weekend total of 30.7 crore. Well, the Vikas Behl-directed film didn’t quite live up to the good expectations that one had from it. Yes, the opening day (Thursday) was a record for Shahid with 13.1 crore coming in but the film came down big time on Friday (7.55 crore). Whatever hopes that the makers would have carried for the film were further quashed when Saturday dipped further with Sunday displaying all signs of closure.

As a result, the weekend total of R… Rajkumar remained intact for Shahid as Shaandaar brought in just around 28 crore in its first three days while the four-day weekend came to 33.51 crore. Still, this isn’t an optimal number as such collections were expected in the first three days itself at the very minimum.

The film largely saw below average to poor reviews coming its way and the word of mouth didn’t help the cause either. The film has gone down and the weekdays aren’t expected to do much either. Though one has to credit Karan Johar for lending fantastic production values for the film which is easily the biggest ever for Shahid, the content as well as the execution let it down.

Meanwhile, it was Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 that took advantage of the situation and hence continued to find an audience. The film scored well over the second weekend too, hence bringing in 10 crore more. With 47.95 crore coming in, the film is set to have a good second week too. Luv Ranjan has delivered a superhit with a bunch of new boys and girls and the film is garnering very good repeat value now.

Note: All collections as per production and distributor sources.
