Eisha Chopra
Eisha Chopra

You’ll recognise Eisha Chopra from Neerja: she’s Debina, Sonam Kapoor‘s best friend and colleague in the movie. She’s the one who encourages her to get over her past marriage and consider a life with Shekhar Ravjiani‘s character, and she’s the one who stole his letter to Neerja just before take-off.

Well, while Eisha is an actress – she’s done several TVCs, had a cameo in Aligarh, and featured in artist Sudarshan Shetty‘s film – she’s also a model, graphic designer and screenwriter. She studied Communication Design at Parsons School of Design in New York, and while she still does freelance graphic designing, her true love lies in film.

Eisha has co-written an Anurag Kashyap film, Clean Shaven, starring Radhika Apte and Satyadeep Misra. This is part of an anthology called Madly, and we hear that the film will be opening at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City. She’s also written a short film called Choose Life for Amit Sharma (the director of Tevar). And currently, she’s working on a feature film for Rose Films.

About Neerja, Eisha reveals:

It was an especially exhausting and exhilarating role for me to play, and also interesting as it was Sonam’s best friend. Incidentally, I also worked with Sonam on my first film project where I was an art assistant on Dilli 6 that she starred in, so we have known each other for years though she had no idea that I was cast as Debina until we met at the airhostess training program. She was especially kind and there are many instances she went out of her way to make us all feel like a unit.I almost didn’t go for the audition as the message didn’t do justice to the role, but when I got multiple calls from the casting office, I thought it was a sign. They auditioned over 200 girls for the part. I was only asked to act like an airhostess checking boarding passes, but they had an actor burst into the audition like a terrorist. This was done to check the spontaneous reaction and shock and to see how an actor can improvise when unprepared. Within 2 days of the audition I got a call that I was selected and was handed a bound script. I had been hoping to even get a TVC with Ram.My part in Neerja has already opened doors for me and I have received much appreciation from my directors and fellow actors and I am thrilled that this was my first film.
