We are told time again that India is rich in culture and tradition and at some point we’re sure you guys stopped listening, just like we had. But here’s the thing: it’s true. And legs sore/ eyes watery from all the fashion today, we can still stand up straight and say that there is SO MUCH that Indian craftsmanship has to offer. The Sustainable & Indian Textiles Day at Lakmé Fashion Week Summer – Resort 2016 was chock-filled with examples of designers who have taken to the beauty of Indian textiles. So much so that they have contributed vastly to the upliftment and revival of dying arts and techniques. Here’s the roundup of the day:

Swati & Sunaina

Swati & Sunaina kicked off this homage to Indian textiles with a beautiful array of colourful saris apt for summer.

Swati Kalsi

Swati Kalsi used delicate Sujani embroidery on tussar, gicha and cotton silk among other things. We love the shades of ivory, camel, berry and black shades she used.

Amrich

Amrich by designers Amit & Richard really nailed the Summer-Resort vibe with their collection that showcased predominantly indigo and white. They did western silhouettes but with a predominance of India ’cause of the use of khadi and hand woven cotton and silk to the use of ikat, shibori, hand block printing and the use of natural dyes.

Debashri Samanta

Debashri Samanta‘s happy and edgy collection had floral embroidery and was made out of a signature weave of tussar and handspun khadi cotton.

Swati Vijaivargie‘s collection was bright and vibrant. Colourful jackets and pants ruled the runway and red was the colour hero for sure!

Indigene

This label’s show had self-proclaimed unpretentious designs with a focus on their ‘made by hand’ philosophy. They had hand-printed ajrakhs, hand spun and handwoven khadi and much more.

Paromita Banerjee

We love the comfortable vibe of Paromita Banerjee‘s clothes. With the flowiness, and the saris and the presence of scarves, we can safely say that fabric is king in this case.

Gaurang

This show was all about volume. The hairdos and even the big flouncy maxi skirts. Everything pointed towards bigger being better this summer. Something to think about huh? Also, speaking of volume, look at who walked the runway, also voluminous, might I add!

One of favourites of the night, this show screamed summer despite not being in the traditional hues associated with the season.

Deepa Gurnani

Our favourite part of this show was the long, flowy numbers and the contrasting sleek ponytails. And how about those headgears?

Injiri by designer Chinar Farooqui was an exact representation of how Indian textiles can be given new life and made super fashionable. Wouldn’t you wear this on a hot day?

Maku

While the masks donned might have initially scared us, the clothes did exactly the opposite. It was a delightful display of maxis and other such, that is quite representative of the summer.

11.11

While the show was a conceptually heavy commentary on women and our beauty, the clothes were light, easy and approachable.
