There are a lot of reasons to love Sonam Kapoor – she’s fun, funny, smart, a good actress, a fashionista and the owner of one of the most dazzling smiles in Bollywood. You know how some people’s smiles light up the entire room? That! She’s been in the industry for some time now and has managed to create a niche for herself. Not only that, her social media game is on point too – making her one of our favourite celebs of all times.
Not that I need more reasons to love Sonam, I thought it’d be fun to revisit the times that she put a big smile on my face (not that my smile has anything on hers. Sigh).
Everyone and their mothers made such a big deal about Sonam’s brief appearance in Coldplay’s Hymn For The Weekend video. She was criticized for perpetuating an Indian stereotype and somehow the length of her appearance on the video became an issue too. You know what she did about it? Nothing!
First of all, I am in a Chris Martin video and I am a huge fan of Coldplay. When I was in high school, I grew up (listening to) Oasis, Coldplay and U2. And if somebody told me at 16 that I was going to be in a video, I would go ‘shut up!’ But I was like it’s fucking Coldplay, dude. I get VIP access to them forever. So on my birthday, I get to take all my friends for a concert. I get VIP access to their concerts forever and I am going to make them sing ‘Yellow’ to me. This is good. When I was in high school, I listened to ‘Yellow’ from Coldplay and ‘Wonderwall’ from Oasis and I used to cry and wondered if anyone would sing me these songs to me. And there I am, doing this video. Everybody is going on about these three shots alone.
I am a complete feminist. Being a feminist is to understand that it’s not about boys and girls, it’s about being who you are, not being afraid, and standing up for what you believe is right.
Oh, the joy! #MultipleHeartsForLife
Okay, Sonam made us weep with this one. But you know, you somehow smiled through the tears – and sometimes that’s the best kind of smile. Neerja Bhanot’s story was an important one to tell and Sonam brought the character to life in such a way that we’d be indebted to her for a long time now.
“Fashion khatam, khatam mujhpe”
When you’re confident and you know it, flash a smile! Haven’t we all heard that a confident smile can impress just about anybody? So whether it’s at a job interview or even a first date, take a cue from Sonam and #SmileToImpress!
