Mahmood Farooqui, the co-director of the 2010 movie Peepli Live has been convicted of rape by Delhi’s Saket Court. On 21 June 2015, Mahmood was arrested by the Delhi Police on charges of raping an American woman in New Delhi. A Delhi Police official told IANS, “A 35-year-old American national woman was raped by the co-director of the film Peepli Live”. The alleged incident took place on March 28th 2015, and while Mahmood has denied the charges and states that he has been falsely implicated, the court decided to convict him of the crime.

Peepli Live was directed by his wife Anusha Rizvi and Mahmood is often credited as the film’s co-director.
