Those of us who are lucky enough to have fun relationships with our mommies are also painfully aware of the kind of sneaky tricks and white lies they use to get us to do what they want. Undoubtedly, all these “mommy truths” as I like to call them come from a good place. Most of the time the white lies and half truths are just a means to get us to do what is best for us and sometimes they’re myths and tales that have just been passed down through the generations. While their genesis might possibly be rooted in some kind of truth, most times these myths are just misconceptions from lack of knowledge. So, in the effort to disseminate useful information, we thought we could even tackle some common misconceptions that are still believed today.

Misconception: Don’t pluck grey hair, three more will grow in its place

Actually, this is false, but it is good practice to not pluck hairs because it sometimes destroys the follicles and can lead to bald patches.

Misconception: Don’t wear lipstick, your lips will become dark

There are many reasons that cause lips to darken from smoking to sun exposure. But lip products will only darken your lips if they are used beyond their expiry date or if they are from disreputable companies.

Misconception: Don’t use deodorant it darkens your underarms

While there might be a possibility that some people’s skin reacts to the ingredients of a deodorant spray, this is not an all encompassing rule.

Misconception: Don’t shave because it will make your skin dry and flaky

Shaving with a razor actually helps skin look and feel smoother by exfoliating or removing the top layer of dead skin cells. Gillette’s Venus razors for instance, include features to help provide a gentle glide and smooth skin. That said, people with skin problems or sensitive skin should consult a dermatologist before trying any hair removal method.

Misconception: Don’t colour your hair, it’ll make it rough

If you don’t care for your hair after colouring it, it will become rough and dry but that goes for uncoloured hair too!

Have I made you go “hmm”? Huh? Huh? Anyway, these are just a few things that your mom might have told you that were wrong, but they pale in comparison to everything that she was right about. Like what Meghan Trainor said about her mama telling her that boys like a little more booty to hold at night ;)
