While 2016 has already seen Neerja, Aligarh and Azhar among others, there is a lot more in the offering, ranging from inspirational success stories to Punjabi folklore.

1. Dangal

Aamir Khan is returning to his Christmas slot this year with Dangal. Mr. Perfectionist is essaying the role of Mahavir Singh Phogat, a wrestler from Bhiwani in Haryana who quit his job to train his daughters in wrestling.

Phogat faced a lot of criticism for letting his daughters play a male dominated sport but the hard work paid off when both the daughters won a gold and silver in the Commonwealth games, 2010.

2. M.S Dhoni: The untold story

India’s fearless and favourite captain, MS Dhoni has an awe inspiring story to tell. Sushant Singh Rajput is portraying the role of the Indian skipper who has come a long way from being a ticket collector in Kharagpur to lifting the 2011 World cup. Kiara Advani and Anupam Kher will be playing supporting roles in the movie.

3. Padmavati

Pretty sure everybody is waiting with bated breath for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s next larger-than-life venture after Bajirao Mastani’s grand success last year. And the muse, Deepika Padukone, of course!

The actress will again join hands with the stellar director to star in and as Padmavati. The film is based on tyrant emperor Alauddin Khilji’s obsession for Padmavati, queen of Chittor. It is expected to go on floors in September.

4. Mirzya

We are VERY excited about Mirzya. Sonam Kapoor’s brother, Harshwardhan Kapoor is making his debut with Mirza Sahiban’s epic love story, a popular tragic romance of Punjab. True to his offbeat style, director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra unfolds the story of star crossed lovers in two parallel worlds, real and fantastical, set in Rajasthan and Ladakh.

5. Sanjay Dutt’s biopic

Rajkumar Hirani’s biopic on the Munnabhai actor has already created a stir in the industry. Ranbir Kapoor has been signed for the movie which is based on Dutt’s real life story. Hirani shot a footage of Sanjay Dutt’s release from the Yerwada jail earlier this year and it is most likely to be included in the final cut. The senior actor is likely to be involved in the film making, giving his regular inputs.

Release date: Christmas 2017 (tentative)

6. Raees

While there is no official confirmation from the makers, Shahrukh Khan’s Raees is allegedly based on Gujarat underworld’s kingpin Abdul Latif. Although the film’s research team consulted the late gangster’s family, they have now demanded a stay on the release of the film and also sued the makers on charges of defamation.
