Devendra Jhajharia Wins A Gold at Rio Paralympics; Breaks His Previous World Record

Devendra Jhajharia won his second Gold in the men’s Javelin throw F46 event at the Rio Paralympics on Tuesday. His beat his earlier record of 62.15 m at the Athens paralympics with an attempt of 63.97 m, which makes his current ranking no. 3 in the world.

This year, India has 2 golds, 1 silver and 1 bronze so far in the Rio paralympics. Earlier this year, Jhajharia also won a gold medal at the 2016 IPC Athletics Asia-Oceania Championship in Dubai. Apart from this, he has won several other accolades like a Gold at the IPC Athletics World Championships; Silver at the 2014 Asian Para Games; and another Gold medal at the 2016 IPC Athletics Asia-Oceania Championship.

Born in Rajasthan, Devendra had to get his hand amputated at the age of 8 when he got electrocuted while climbing a tree. He is currently being supported by the GoSports Foundation through the Para Champions Programme and coached by Dronacharya Awardee coach R.D. Singh.
