Bollywood has long been an inspiration for Indian weddings, right from the songs to the dance moves and of course, the outfits, ladies. Secretly, I think lehengas/sarees are the main reason I love (attending) weddings. And food, but that’s for another day.
With the wedding season around the corner, we compiled a list of a few iconic Bollywood lehengas and sarees we have seen on screen and loved and lusted over. Some go back to as far as the 90’s and some are as recent as 2016; and irrespective of the time, they are transfixed on our minds to the extent that the mere mention brings a clear vision of them.

1. Kareena Kapoor in Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham
Bole choodiyan was a chartbuster in its time but that wasn’t the only reason the song was/is still exploited during the Sangeet ceremonies. Everybody wanted (they still do) Kareena’s lehenga and I don’t see a reason why they shouldn’t.
2. Kajol in Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge
DDLJ will always remain more than a movie for most of us. It’s an age people swear by and a tear-jerker for me will always be Kajol sitting in a room full of festivities, waiting to reunite with Raj. Decked up in that lehenga, of course.
3. Kajol in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai
Why, of course! I remember everything from Kajol-SRK’s emotional chat under the stars to Kajol descending the stairs and Aman (Salman Khan) dragging her to take her to Raj. The scene, the outfits, is tattoo-ed on my mind, you could say!
4. Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone in Bajirao Mastani
Well well, these two were mesmerising in Pinga. The moves were on point, and so were the costumes. This one is unforgettable.
5. Kangana Ranaut in Tanu Weds Manu
Tanu Weds Manu poster was quite intriguing and Kangana’s green bridal lehenga went on to become quite popular.
6. Deepika Padukone in Ye Jawaani Hai Deewani
This had to make it to the list, quite obviously. Barring the figure, you can opt for the red sharara with a choli for your bestie’s mehendi ceremony. Brownie points if you have that figure to flaunt.
7. Rani Mukherjee in Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham
JUST LOOK AT HER! Rani has been wooing our hearts since long now. How sexy did she look in Shava Shava as she grooved along side Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan?!
8. Madhuri Dixit in Hum Aapke Hai Kaun
Another lehenga to go down the history. Pretty sure Madhuri’s purple lehenga inspired many trends during the time and while trends may come and go, this lehenga is distinctively memorable.
9. Deepika Padukone in Ye Jawaani Hai Deewani
Deepika’s cobalt blue saree has seen a lot of copy-paste versions but hey, this is here to stay. So go ahead, get that saree and improvise if you must.
10. Alia Bhatt in Student Of The Year
Yaaasss! So young and peppy. Obviously we want one in the wardrobe asap!
11. Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai in Devdas
Evergreen and spectacular enough for me to not say anything further about this.
12. Priyanka Chopra in Dostana
Desi-girl is a legit enough term and all credits to PeeCee for that. She was #Goals.
13. Alia Bhatt in 2 States
All her outfits right from the saree in Iski Uski to her bridal lehenga were simply fabulous. They were the perfect amalgamation of South Indian tradition and Punjabi jazziness.
14. Aishwarya Rai in Jodha Akbar
Sigh! Aish looked no less than a dream in all that royalty she adorned and carried off so well.
15. Madhuri Dixit in Devdas
I don’t know about you guys but the mention of hara rang catapults me to Madhuri being a goddess in the song and the film.
16. Sonam Kapoor in Prem Ratan Dhan Payo
Sonam is the epitome of fashion in our country and needless to say, anything she wears becomes a sensation. I would steal that wardrobe at any given chance.
17. Deepika Padukone in Ram Leela
Deepika sometimes makes me just want to sit and stare. All day long. There is nothing I would like to change about her all the splendid outfits she wore in the film.
18. Aishwarya Rai in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam
Another fine look by Aishwarya which is endlessly pleasing to the eyes. That lavender lehenga was an excellent choice for Salman-Aishwarya’s sensuous song.

19. Preity Zinta in Kal Ho Na ho
Preity looked stunning as she did some inimitable steps with Saif Ali Khan and Shah Rukh Khan in Mahi Ve.
20. Rani Mukherjee in Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna
Rani has been a trendsetter, I believe. She bought net sarees to the front and rocked them like nobody else could have ever done. And those sarees were gorgeous to say the least.

Do I need to say anything after you have seen the vision that is Kareena Kapoor? ‘Nuff said!
22. Sushmita Sen in Main Hoon Na
Sushmita Sen is unparalleled when it comes to carrying the six yards and looked every bit heavenly.
23. Kareena Kapoor in RA.one
Goes without saying that this was a historic outfit. After all, the saree made it to Kareena’s wax model at Madame Tussauds.
24. Sonam Kapoor in Aisha
Anything and everything Sonam does is fashion and these classic white saris with a modern spin were meant to get famous.
25. Deepika Padukone in Bajirao Mastani
Divine. I rest my case.
26. Katrina Kaif in Baar Baar Dekho
The latest entrant on Bollywood’s lust-worthy lehengas, this one was definitely out of ordinary and worth all the hype.
