I’ve felt a palpable excitement about the H&M x KENZO collaboration since I got word of it in May. So, when I was presented with the opportunity to check out the collection for myself, in my most favorite city in the world no less, I had to be there.

From the moment I landed in New York, I knew it was going to be epic. After all, past H&M collaborations with high-fashion designers have never disappointed. Visions of previous collections with Karl Lagerfeld, Alexander Wang, and Balmain were racing through my mind. I couldn’t wait to see what KENZO would deliver.

Then, a close interaction with the creative directors of KENZO, Humberto Leon and Carol Lim (the famed duo behind Opening Ceremony), confirmed that getting my hands on this collection would be worth the retail battle. They described a celebratory mix of different worlds, vivid prints, and bold patterns coming together. I couldn’t wait to see the show!

Photographer Jean-Paul Goude‘s fearless ad campaign featured a cool cast of ambassadors like Iman, Chance the Rapper, and Chloe Sevigny, all of whom are no strangers to rocking straight-off-the-runway looks that most of us wouldn’t dare. So I wondered, could the average H&M shopper like myself pull off something so bold? Once I set my eyes on the collection, I got my answer. Each and every piece of the collection was wearable. Sure, the Imans and Chloes of the world can pull off a head-to-toe tiger print getup. But I’ll stick to balancing their bold, statement pieces with neutral basics.

The collection was comprised of everything you would expect from KENZO: knitwear dresses and pants, off-shoulder dresses, and bold prints. Pairing this wildly playful collection with accessories that equally demand your attention made the collection even more outstanding. Space-age visor shades, cross body bags, printed scarves and red tiger-print boots with even brighter coloured soles totally stole the show—and my heart.

The show itself was legendary, with every little detail thoroughly thought out. Welcome kits, invitations, shopping bags, Snapchat filters—everything bore that signature Kenzo style. Breathing life into each ensemble were beatboxers and dancers grooving to the track ‘to express yourself, bringing forth an energy that can only be found in the city that never sleeps. An overdose of vibrant colour and animalistic prints transported me to the concrete jungle where high-fashion and street style come together—just as the designers had envisioned.

The show concluded with a burst of confetti raining down from the ceiling while lively dancers pulled me from my seat to join them. To top it all off, rapper Ice Cube closed the show with a killer performance that got my heart racing faster than when the show started.
