Last week, Abhay Deol took to his Facebook page to start a very relevant discussion on fairness creams and their negative effects on society. He also slammed Bollywood celebrities like Sonam Kapoor, Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, John Abraham and more for carelessly promoting the stereotype that ‘fair is beautiful’.
While a lot of Bollywood celebrities have chosen to avoid the topic, Saif Ali Khan spoke to Indian Express and said Abhay’s opinion should be heard.
I think I have endorsed them a couple of times and I am told they are the largest selling things. But it’s not a stand I have felt particularly strong about. Everyone in this country is obsessed with fair skin. It’s the first thing people say when a child is born. And it’s important that Abhay Deol’s voice on the subject be heard.
But it was his reason for endorsing them that we found rather strange and surprising!
Perhaps we all know somewhere that selling that product is wrong, and somewhere we wish we took a different stand but we don’t. If you don’t sell it, someone else would. There should maybe be a law against it. Without a law how do you hope people won’t bleach their faces?
I’m sorry, what? Just because somebody else will sell it doesn’t mean you should if you know its repercussions. Anyway, got some thoughts on the matter? Tell us in the comments below.
