Being one of India’s more private fashion designers, Sabyasachi Mukherji isn’t known to frequent the spotlight often. So needless to say, we were thrilled when given the opportunity to meet the masterful couturier. Despite the fact that Team MissMalini interviews celebrities and designers on a daily basis, many have yet to meet the beloved designer (and have actually filed him under their “bucket list” of industry insiders they’re dying to meet next).
Our Fashion & Beauty Director Meriam Ahari met with Sabyasachi at The Taj Hotel in Colaba to learn more about his first foray into designing diamonds. Sabayasachi’s Zanyah collection in collaboration with Forevermark is reminiscent of his quintessential aesthetic: opulent, superiorly crafted, and dripping with elegance. Interestingly though, the actual designs are more akin to the designer’s personal style, rather than his namesake couture line. The more classic and minimalist styles take shape in the form of enameled drop earrings and twenties-inspired vintage rings (for both men and women) in cuts of yellow, rose, and white gold. According to Sabyasachi, the name Zanyah translates to “unique and exceptional.”
Here are some surprising facts we learned about Sabyasachi:
1) He’s a pisces, but swears he should be a Taurus.
2) He works 18 hours a day and still finds time to swim laps for 1.5 hours (just call him Beyonce…).
3) He wants to design cars, a chain of hotels, perfumes, accessories, home decor and a prêt line so more people can wear his clothing (really crossing our fingers on this one here!).
4) On a rare day that he’s not engrossed with work, Sabya is at home with AC and fans on blast, wrapped up in 2 blankets, chowing down on rice, dal, and fried potatoes before passing out (yup, sounds pretty similar to our Friday night…).
5) His favourite brand is Uniqlo (who knew we had so much in common!).
6) He first started designing interiors and jewellery. Designing clothes happened “by accident.”
7) He hates fusion food (us too).
8) He could live in one single track pant and t-shirt for the rest of his life.
9) He doesn’t drink alcohol.
10) He would love to skinny dip but is afraid of swimming in the dark.
