Bomber jackets have always been the go-to item of clothing of the super cool, with stars rocking them on screen and stage, making them must-haves in the wardrobe of every guy who wanted to look as cool as Tom Cruise in Top Gun or Bieber on stage!

But, the bomber jacket didn’t have such a glamorous beginning. It started off as a standard issue jacket with heavy lining on the inside for American Air Force and Army personnel that flew at high altitudes during World War II, to keep them warm. Naturally, it had to be functional and utilitarian, with lots of pockets to hold their equipment, hence the over sized nature of most bomber jackets.

This has obviously evolved, and you can now buy bombers in various fits, including slim or straight, and every kind of fabric, besides the standard nylon or leather that it traditionally came in. But the basics still remain the same, to keep in mind if you’re looking for that one cool bomber to have in your wardrobe – It’ll have ribbed cuffs and hem, front zip and a defined neckline. Of course there are many variations to this available now, so you may not want to buy the first one that you see Akshaye Kumar wearing!

So in this week’s #TheArtOf Dressing , we look at 4 different kinds of Bomber Jackets, and how they can be styled.

1. Camouflage

A staple (in my opinion) for every guy is a camouflage bomber! Since it already has a lot going on with the camo print, it’s best to keep it simple, snug fit, with no add ons like extra pockets or zippers etc. One of the best ways to make this bomber stand out is by pairing it with a monochrome outfit. And the best part is,  layer this over a basic outfit, like a simple plain T- Shirt and jeans, and you immediately looked styled! You could also wear your jacket with chinos or casual trousers and trainers.

2. Sports Luxe

The Sports Luxe bomber trend hit the streets not so long ago, and has been gaining momentum ever since. It’s perfect to throw over a hoodie, layered above a polo or crew /wide neck t-shirt, and pair with comfy denims or even sweat pants and tennis shoes!

3. Leather Bomber

The classic leather straight fit bomber is another favourite of mine, cos it gives you a cool, contemporary feel when paired right, with ripped jeans, faded or chest print t-shirt, or even a polo. Although the choice of footwear here is more funky with the silver walking shoes, it works just as well with bulky industrial shoes.

4. Smart Casual / Suede

A casual suede brown bomber is another basic shade and style that can easily be paired, especially with a  smart formal or casual shirt, chinos or blue denim trousers (brown and tan works best with blue),or even denim on denim, like I’ve done here, and with the right footwear, depending on the occasion (smart or casual).
