India is a country that is obsessed with fairness. Why else do you think these companies flourish in countries like ours? Every nook and corner has a massive hoarding promoting some sort of fairness product while these companies make millions at the cost of our insecurities. How often have you been told to be careful while in the sun or you’ll get dark? That being dusky is not good for you? There are matrimonial websites we all know of that have a specific category for skin colour while looking for your prospective partner.
And to make matters worse, some of our favourite Bollywood stars endorse these products. Abhay Deol, not too long ago, called out Bollywood for blatantly promoting the idea than one skin tone is better than the other. It was nice to see someone from the industry come forth and address an issue so important.
