Toners are the hidden gems of skincare. Most people overlook them and think that they are unnecessary, but in reality these products are true workhorses. Here are 5 things you need to know about toners and why you should incorporate them into your regimen.

1. They Finish Off The Cleansing Step

The main function of a toner is to complete the cleansing of your skin. Not only do they dislodge any dirt and impurities, but also take off any residue that your cleanser has left behind.

2. They Balance Your Skin

As amazing as face washes are, they tend to be alkaline in nature. By using them, our skin’s naturally acidic pH goes slightly out of whack. Toners work to restore this balance and bring the pH of your skin to its optimal level.

3. They Increase The Efficacy Of Your Other Skincare Products

Since toners give your pores a good, deep cleanse, they prep the skin so that the subsequent products can penetrate better. That means you get more bang for your buck for every serum and cream your purchase!

4. Every Toner Is Not Equal

There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to toners. Those with sensitive skin should look for one containing chamomile, whilst products with glycolic acid work wonders on dull and congested skin. Drier skin types can get the hydration they need with a hyaluronic-based toner.

5. You Can DIY

If you don’t want to buy a toner, you can DIY! A mixture of apple cider vinegar and water is perfect for oily skin, whilst a blend of green tea and honey works magic on dry and normal skin.

Remember to use a toner immediately after you cleanse your face, both during the day and at night. You can either pat the product in directly or soak a cotton pad and swipe it across your face.
