Today, we are stepping away from all the glitz and the glam, to talk about something very important: mental health! This is just as important an issue in India as much as it is in the rest of the world. In fact, suicide rates in India have skyrocketed in recent years and yet somehow, we find ourselves in this weird situation where even if we want to talk about it, we think we can’t or we shouldn’t. So what is actually holding us back? Why is something so important, so easily overlooked? Today, we attempt to break down this invisible wall and show you that it’s ok to talk about this. It’s ok to feel how you’re feeling and just know that you’re not alone.

4 Reasons Why People May Not Want To Seek Help

1. Fear And Shame

There is a fear about talking to people because of the way they may perceive you. There is a major stigma attached to depression and mental health. Or maybe, you think you will be judged or even worse, misunderstood.

2. Lack Of Insight & Awareness

The fact that there aren’t enough people talking about this issue, only makes it seem like people don’t care or it’s not as serious of a problem. Issues pertaining to mental health aren’t as commonly known to people nor is there enough education about it. Often times, someone who is struggling to process what they are going through, has no way to try and figure it out because the information they are looking for isn’t something that is easily available.

3. Distrust

People who have been let down or hurt too much tend to be distrusting. They do not want to trust someone with their secrets and emotional or mental troubles. The fear of being ridiculed or rejected or even someone thinking they are broken is not something they want. Just because you think your problems are “small”, doesn’t mean you can’t talk to someone about it. Sometimes, you just need to take a leap of faith.

4. Helplessness

Sometimes, when we’re down and out, there is a weird sense of helplessness that overcomes us. We try to shake it off but becomes increasingly harder to do. We tend to end up secluding ourselves in hopes of resolving it, which isn’t the right thing. You need to overcome this feeling and the best way to do it, is to talk about it with someone.

Common Misconceptions Regarding Getting Professional Help

1. They Put You On Medication

The notion that all professional psychiatrists will put you on medication is the most common misconception people have. Also, thinking they will make things worse or diagnose you with something you don’t have, is wrong. They have intensively studied and practised for years, so there is merit in their advice. Often times, they can help you get past what is troubling you. Maybe all you needed was someone to listen to you and they can be just that.

2. It’s A Sign Of Weakness

We as human beings think an awful lot about what other people will think and say about us. Times have changed and things that were once considered taboo are common topics of discussion now, so why be so archaic in your thoughts about mental health? Seeking professional help is actually the smartest thing you could do. It gives you a clear picture and understanding of what you’re going through. Don’t let what others think or your pride prevent you from getting the help you may need!

3. It’s Not That Serious

Who said that only people with “serious” issues need professional help? Those thoughts belong in a time long gone! Don’t take what you’re feeling so lightly and just brush it away. Feelings have a way of manifesting themselves and before you know it, you’ll find yourself in a downward spiral. While sure, not everything warrants professional help, if you feel the need to consult one, do it. The severity of what you’re feeling is of no consequence when it comes to asking for help.

5 Reasons Why You Should Talk About It

1. It Will Clear Your Mind

Internalising your feelings is the worst way to deal with it. Find someone you know and trust and talk to them about what you’re going through. Sometimes, just speaking about it helps ease your mind. Hearing yourself out loud could also help you gain some perspective not to mention, another person’s thoughts and advice on the issue.

2.  Helps Get Rid Of Negative Feelings

When something is troubling you, you tend to be overwhelmed with negativity. When you speak about it, it’s like a weight gets lifted off your chest. It helps give your thoughts a new dimension and you can better process and deal with what you’re feeling.

3. Helps You Realise, You’re Not The Only One

There is power in unity. Opening about your struggles and problems may shine a light and give you insight, that will help you realise that you’re not the only one going through this. There are many people sailing in the same boat and that realisation can be a powerful thing.

4. Helps You Build Confidence

These heavy feelings have a way of shutting you off. Your confidence can take quite the beating in this process. Talking about it can help relieve you of the baggage and allow you to slowly and steadily rebuild your self-confidence.

5. Makes You More Sensitive To Others

Through the entire process of talking to someone and being heard, there is a level of sensitivity you gain. We become more aware of our surroundings and the struggles of others which in turn, helps us raise awareness for others. It’s a chain reaction.

We encourage you to speak up, to talk, to share your thoughts and feelings. There is nothing to gain from solitude and the sooner you realise that the faster you’ll grow and be on your way to happiness. Life is tough, but you can make it easier by sharing the baggage with someone. Talk about it and break the silence. Even if it’s not something you’re going through, help raise awareness!
