Sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it? But as you know, we’re really amazing people who constantly look for news that could add some magic to your (and ours) otherwise regular and boring lives, so here’s the deal – you can actually make great money if you’re good at playing video games. Everybody and their grandmas know that Indian kids are always discouraged from showing any kind of inclination towards arts or sports as it apparently hampers their chances of becoming doctors and engineers. But if you’ve been a little rebel and excelled at popular video games then there’s a special version of Kaun Banega Crorepati that exists solely for you and your talent. That little kingdom is called eSports aka electronic sports – a form of organised, multiplayer video game competitions which are usually between professional players.

In January 2018, MTV India launched a show called U-Cypher where teams competed over four popular games: DOTA2, CounterStrike, Real Cricket17 and Tekken7. If MTV is interested in the industry enough to make a show about it, then rest assured, this is a legit thing that can dominate mainstream Indian Internet. In its first season, U-Cypher kept Rs.51 lakhs as the prize pool. The winners won Rs.21 lakhs for being kickass (and for winning, obviously). Popular esports company, Cobx Gaming too has put up an estimate of Rs 1 crore for their South East Asian Tournament and another esports company, Nodwin Gaming announced the overall prize pool for their tournament – Rs. 1 crore at the recently held India Gaming Show.

Video game culture is a subculture in its own right and with its rising popularity, we can already see it as a very significant influence on pop culture. As it happens in most cases, the recognition begins from the developed countries (as they have better Internet and more money), but Indians are slowly and surely becoming major “players”. Yep, Abbas-Mustan would be proud! #SorryNotSorry

Basically, if you know where to look and how to play, then you could totally become a millionaire. Hopefully, with the increase in female representation, the rampant sexism prevalent in the world of gaming will decrease as well.
