Frizz; a word that evokes the same dreaded feeling as the word, ‘pimple’. It’s unwanted, unnecessary and can take a while to get rid of. Living in a country like ours means it’s a regular phenomenon. And as much as we would like to get rid of frizzy hair, it’s essential to first understand what exactly causes it.

Just like our skin, hair needs moisture too. And when there’s a lack of moisture, your hair cuticle (a.k.a the outermost strand of your hair) opens and allows outside air into it. This in turn leads to frizz, as the hair strand swells and increases in volume making your hair look dry.

Now that you know what leads to frizz, here’s how you can beat it:

Haircare

1. Switch up your shampoo

Opt for a sulphate-free shampoo. Look out for products that are high in glycerine and avoid any alcoholic properties as it can dry out your hair cuticle and cause frizz.

2. Weekly conditioning

If your hair tends to get dry it needs moisturising, as a lack of moisture can cause your cuticles to open up. So once you’re done with the regular, post-shampoo conditioning, use a hair mask that includes coconut oil.

3. Wash less frequently

We know that it’s hot and sticky but over-washing can lead to your hair’s natural oils being stripped away. Washing your hair with cold water also helps retain moisture.

4. Oil regularly

To ensure your cuticles are being nourished, oiling your hair is quite necessary. Coconut or argan oil can really help lock in the desired moisture for your hair.

Styling

5. Hair drying

Once you’re out of the shower, avoid drying your hair roughly with a towel. This causes friction which disrupts the cuticles. Instead, dab a cotton towel gently over your hair so that it soaks up the excess water. Next, use a serum on damp hair to reduce the frizz.

6. Style it in an up-do

Staying away from heating tools is key when it comes to keeping frizz at bay. Instead of letting your hair down, try an up-do that’s hassle-free and let’s you stay a little cooler around your shoulders and neck.

Tips

7. Carry necessary accessories

We can never be too certain about the heat and weather around us. So, it’s probably a good thing if you’re ready with the essential hair accessories. Here are a few things you’ll need to carry in your handbag:

  • Bobby pins
  • Hair ties
  • Clear hair gel
  • Headband
  • Scarf
