We all need to be a little creative now and then. Often times, we tend to find ourselves a little stuck when it comes to the creative department. Almost every field requires you to now be creative and think outside the box when it comes to problem-solving and even idea generation. If indeed you are stuck and can’t seem to find a single thought, here are some of the best ways to get those creative juices flowing again.

1. Get Weird With The Rules

When it comes to creativity, especially at work, we usually tend to follow some strict rules or guidelines that are set up by the business. Sometimes, this tends to get us a little caught up in our thoughts. Break the rules a little just so that you get the juices flowing. Better yet, get a little weird with the rules. Reward failure and punish inaction. Create some conflict in your thoughts and start thinking contrary to what you’re used to hearing. Mix things up until you break out from the rut.

2. Think Inside The Box

We’re told time and again about the importance of thinking outside the box. However, often times we think that in order to do that, we need to discard everything that’s inside that box. When you’re stuck, try going back into the box and figuring out what you can take from there. Think of it as going back to the basics and then build upward from there. All it takes is one spark.

3. Don’t Worry About Being Original

Sure it’s great to be original. However, it’s not something that is possible to achieve every time and that’s absolutely fine. Not every great idea needs to be an original one, especially when you find yourself stuck in your thoughts. Start by finding a source of inspiration and then build on that. It’s essential to remember that you do need to keep it authentic and true to yourself. You can’t just copy paste a thought or someone else’s idea.

4. Do A Quick Little Exercise

It’s a good idea to try and change your surroundings or scenery in order to get a burst of creativity. Excercise is one of those things that can provide that for you. You don’t have to get drop dead exhausted though. A basic 30 minutes can help boost your creativity immensely. Not only does exercise help with creativity, it also helps every dimension of cognition. So take a quick run or do a few sit-ups and you should be back on track.

5. Plan Ahead

Creativity doesn’t always mean having to be spontaneous. You still need to focus on the organization part of being productive. When you think you’re in the zone, make plans ahead of time for topics you know you have to tackle at a later time. This helps you avoid flatlining when it comes to creativity. Creativity won’t strike you on cue, but a simple mind map and a bit of creative focus can go a long way.

6. Power Nap

Sounds like a dream come true right? Believe it or not, taking a power nap actually helps you get your creative juices flowing. It gets you in a good headspace and also makes you feel refreshed. While taking the nap, clear your mind of all thoughts. Think of it as cleaning the slate and restarting.

7. Identify Keywords

A brilliant way to help you get over a creative hurdle is to observe and find keywords. If there aren’t any specified words, think of the task at hand and start to jot down words that seem to go with it. These will act as your keywords. You can then start to build an idea around each of these words and soon, you’ll find yourself in a flow. Always use words to get yourself out of a sticky, creative situation.
