The final match of the 11th edition of VIVO IPL ended with  Chennai Super Kings beating Sunrisers Hyderabad. But this wasn’t the only victory. India’s leading video streaming platform, Hotstar partnered with Akamai Technologies, Inc. (the world’s largest and most trusted cloud delivery platform), to break International records and soar past 10 million concurrent viewers. They finished the tournament with a total of 10.3 million simultaneous users!

In the past six weeks, the 11th season of Indian Premiere League has featured high points with Hotstar breaking world records. However, last night’s match helped Hotstar reach a new milestone. The final match was broadcast in eight languages on 10 TV channels as well as on Hotstar on Sunday. The eleven different feeds were all available on demand on Hotstar. The 10 million mark was crossed two balls before the CSK claimed the winning title.

Commenting on the development, the CEO of Hotstar, Ajit Mohan added,

What is remarkable about yesterday’s milestone is thoughtful technology companies now have the scale and expertise to deliver big global events elegantly. It is clear that people still gravitate towards well-crafted stories, whether TV shows, movies, sports or news. And, marketers still value consumers who are actually engaged and paying attention. Mobile video is now mainstream. And we are proud that Hotstar is shaping this new world.

Parimal Pandya, Vice President, Media, APJ, Akamai Technologies added,

The VIVO IPL 2018 finals set a new record for Hotstar and Akamai while crafting a new moment in the history of the Internet. 10.3 million concurrent viewers is, without a shadow of a doubt, the most that have ever tuned in to watch live action of any kind delivered online.

This is certainly a proud moment for an Indian digital platform. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below.
