A lot of people tend to get really mad when someone asks for their space. Whenever people hear the word, the first thing they seem to think is that it’s an excuse. It’s true though, a lot of people tend to use it as an excuse to avoid or break away from things. However, many times, people just really just need a quick timeout. Here are 5 reasons why it’s good to give people their space when they ask for it.

1. Information Processing

Sometimes, people tend to go through things or situations that they are unable to process. It’s hard to come up with words and make sense of such things. During this time, they usually tend to go into a bit of a shell because they need some time to process and rationalise their thoughts. You may think you’re trying to be helpful by constantly asking them what’s wrong but that only makes things worse. They know you’re there for them, just give them their space and they will be fine.

2. Displaced Emotions

Often times, when people have a bad day or are in a bad mood, they tend to get agitated. They kind of withdraw themselves because they don’t want to lash out at someone else. When someone tells you politely they aren’t in the mood and asks you to give them some space, give it to them. The chances of them unleashing the full force of their wrath and frustration at you are pretty high and you really wouldn’t enjoy that.

3. Helps People Recharge

It’s perfectly normal for people to need and want to recharge. We live in a time where we’re constantly on the move and we’re always under constant pressure for a lot of things. People think it’s just introverts or shy people who need to recharge their social batteries. However, even outgoing or extroverted people need to slow down. When you know someone is burning out or is under a lot of stress and they ask you for space, it’s probably because they need to recharge.

4. It’s Respectful

The sooner you realise that all people are different and hence, function differently, the more respectful you become. No everyone has the same common interests and the same manner in which they process things. Some people need to go into a shell and recharge. Sometimes, it could be as simple as they have prior commitments or are they’re just busy. You need to respect every person and their requests, especially if you care for them.

5. Everyone Needs Some Me Time

Whether it’s some rest, a solo trip or just some Netflix binge time, we all need a break at some point. There is no harm in asking for some space and definitely no harm when you give someone their space. Time spent with yourself is some of the most important in life as it helps you introspect and learn new things about yourself. Everyone deserves a time off. So, be mindful and respectful towards others.

Whether it’s a relationship or just a friend, try and be more understanding, kind and empathetic towards them and their situation. Giving someone their space isn’t a bad thing so stop fearing it so much.
