Tymberlee Hill Wax GIF by HULU - Find & Share on GIPHY

I have been on the waxing bandwagon since my teenage years. Juggling different appointments at different times of the month (depending on the hair growth on each part of my body) and keeping aside cash in my monthly budget —The struggle was real—And that’s when I turned to the spontaneous and affordable option: the razor. And while the shaving life wasn’t that hectic, it did need a dedicated extra half hour of shower time. Every twenty-something working girl knows how precious an extra 30 minutes can be, so that’s when I decided to start gingerly researching laser removal that could possibly give me a long-term solution to my hair growth.

That’s when I stumbled upon The Thérapie Clinic. The clinic, in Fort (South Mumbai), has the latest in laser technology—The limited edition Soprano Ice Platinum. This is the only clinically-proven method of hair removal that is painless, yet highly effective.

The Patch Test

Full disclosure: I have a medical history, so I wasn’t sure if I could even get a patch test, which is where they test a small patch of your skin (preferably somewhere on the arm or a leg) to see how you and your body reacts to the laser. But after a green signal from my doctor and a consultation with the experts at Thérapie, I forged ahead.

They drew a square on my arm with the help of a white pencil (marking the patch), shaved it and then applied a gel that helps with the swift movement of the laser machine on the skin. And after a few beeps (and what felt like a millisecond) I was done!

The Procedure

You will be amazed to see how quick and painless a laser session here really is. I scheduled a full body laser treatment so that I could report my experience and the results of this treatment in entirety. Shraddha, the manager at Thérapie advised that we only tackle those areas that have hair growth, rather than a complete head-to-toe, no-inch-spared approach. Even though I don’t have PCOD, I do have some hormonal imbalance that affects my hair growth.

When it comes to the face—Apart from the usual suspects: upper lip, chin and a tad bit of side locks, I wanted them to target some unwanted hair growth on the side of my neck. I always had a few thick strands of hair that I would pluck almost on a daily basis—annoying, to say the least! And like Shradha mentioned during our consultation, the

coarser

and darker the hair, the better the results—I can say now, after the experience that it’s 100% true! For the body, I asked them to target full arms, underarms, full legs, bikini and little patches on my stomach and nipple area.

Twenty four hours before my first-ever full body laser session, I had to wet shave all the above-mentioned areas. While I am good at shaving my hands and legs, shaving down under was a whole new ball game altogether! I suddenly have an all new respect for my bikini waxer! But after a few sessions, you’ll ace the shaving game just like I did after my fourth session!

So they kick-started the sessions by marking small squares all over my body, lathering on some transparent gel, and giving me chic, protective eye-wear that made the entire process seem cooler! They even gave me a stress ball to divert my nervousness, but honestly, I didn’t need it. Small areas like the face and underarms take less than 5 minutes, while full legs and hands and the bikini area can take about 15 to 20 minutes each. While it depends on your tolerance for pain, the entire affair for me, was almost painless. The only times I felt uncomfortable was when I felt some warmth on some highly sensitive patches or tingling on areas close to a bone like the knees. It sometimes stings (very minute and bearable) when the laser hits the patch where you have coarse hair growth or in-growths. But that’s all you feel!

The Aftercare

Once I got done with my full body session, they put a generous amount of cooling gel or laser aid. This gel cools down the area that has been exposed to the laser so that skin does not react in any way. There isn’t a long list of things you can’t do right after your laser, but the most important was to wear loose and comfy clothes and stay out of the sun (before as well as after). They also advised me to keep my body cool, NOT workout for the next 24 hours and keep applying laser aid for the next 48 hours. Also, I was told to go easy on the cosmetics and skincare regime for the next 24 hours after my session.

The Results

So, on an average, a person would need around 6 to 8 sessions of laser that are spread over a 6-8 weeks interval for the body and 4-6 weeks gap for the face. Again, the number of sittings you need will depend on how well your body responds to laser (mine did fantastically well!) Shraddha mentioned that it could take up to 2 weeks to see results and that the dead hair takes about 15 days to grow out and fall out. So, right after my first session when I didn’t see any difference in my hair growth, I just continued to shave as and when required for two and a half weeks. Post this, I suddenly noticed a remarkable difference in my hair growth.

Laser has slowed down my hair growth in all parts of my body and the hair that comes out is much finer. I stopped shaving my hands and legs for weeks and the hair on my underarms was so fine I didn’t even feel the need to shave it! And remember the hair growth I used to have on the side of my neck that I had to deal with every day? That was such a problem for me and it even gave me some marks (which I had to conceal with makeup)—That problem is no more, thanks to laser. I only have to shave there once a week and my neck looks spotless! From shaving my legs and hands once in 4-5 days I went to shaving once in two and a half weeks. After each session, the hair growth slows down and the hair becomes finer. I am now going to my fourth session and I practically shave once a month or before my laser session only. This really is a dream come true for me! So if you ask me if laser is worth it, I would say:

FAQ

1. What makes laser more effective than any other hair removal process?

Laser Hair Removal is the best option for removing unwanted hair from the face and body giving permanent results as opposed to temporary alternative options such as waxing, shaving or threading. The laser destroys the hair follicle at the root. There is no downtime, as you do not have to wait for the hair to grow out like with waxing and can shave as often as you like, even in between laser sessions. It is a relatively quick, painless and easy method, requiring a treatment only once every 4-8 weeks depending on the area targeted. It is also a great solution to ingrown hair because the laser targets the hair follicle at the root destroying its ability to produce hair.

It

is a clinically tested treatment, FDA approved and has undergone rigorous trials to ensure patient safety and efficacy.

2. Does laser hurt?

Laser Hair Removal with the Soprano Ice Platinum is painless. Certain areas could be more sensitive but overall quick and pain-free.

3. What kind of laser technology do you use?

The Thérapie Clinic only uses the Soprano Ice Platinum, a limited edition technology for laser hair removal, combining 3 different laser wavelengths into a single hand-piece, simultaneously targeting different tissue depths within the hair follicle. By combining the absorption and penetration levels of three different wavelengths, Soprano ICE Platinum achieves the safest and most comprehensive hair removal treatment available in the world today. The handpiece also has a – 3-degree sapphire cooling tip to cool the epidermal layer of the skin as the laser is working.

4. Can laser be done on any skin tone?

Laser hair removal with the Soprano Ice Platinum is suitable for all skin types and also targets fine hair to guarantee quick, safe and painless results towards the permanent removal of unwanted hair from the face and body.

5. Who cannot get this treatment done?

Anyone above the age of 16 would be suitable for laser hair removal, which works best on dark hair and any skin type. Those with white, blonde or light-coloured hair, unfortunately, may find that the treatment will not work for them as laser targets the dark pigment in the hair. We would check the medical history to make sure the client is suitable for laser. Certain medications or medical conditions could be contraindications for laser such as heart disease, epilepsy, skin cancer etc.

6. How many sessions does it take to get the optimal results?

We would recommend a minimum course of 6 sessions every 6-8 weeks to have 80-90% reduction. However, hair growth is hormonal so results could vary from one individual to another and certain areas could require additional sessions.

7. Why can’t I pluck/ wax my hair after getting laser?

Once you start with laser, it is important that you only shave. When you wax, pluck or thread you are removing the hair from the root, so if you do laser the hair may not be there to target with the laser. Shaving cuts the hair off at the surface so you can shave as often as required in between laser sessions. Bleach is also not recommended as laser targets pigment in the hair and only works on dark brown or black hair.

8. How expensive is it?

Thérapie offers various combination packages based on the most popular areas of treatment, whereby clients save anywhere from 20-40% on the course prices. We will work with you and come up with a payment plan that suits you best. The upper lip, for example, is at ₹1500 per session and the underarm at ₹2000 per session when you sign up for a course of 6 sessions and the treatment time for these areas would be only a couple of minutes per session! A full body including arms, legs, bikini, underarms and one area of the face is ₹1,15,000 which when converted to an EMI is about ₹10,300 per month for 12 months. One of our most popular packages is bikini and underarms for ₹35,000 for a course.

Most people think that laser hair removal is too expensive. At The Thérapie Clinic, we strive to make it affordable for everyone. We offer a number of different payment plans that work for you, which includes a pay-per-treatment option, along with popular combinations of treatment areas. Thérapie’s ethos is to offer result-driven treatments at affordable prices with superior customer service.

9. What kind of results can one expect after the completion of this treatment?

With a course of 6 sessions, you should have 80-90% reduction after a course of 6 sessions (every 6-8 weeks) on the body areas. On the face, you may require more sessions as there are more hair follicles and the hair growth cycle on the face is faster. For the face, we would recommend doing the laser every 4-6 weeks.

10. Can laser be done in any area of the body and what are the most common areas for the laser?

Laser can be done on all areas of the body. The most common areas are arms, legs, bikini, underarms and the face.

Hope this has helped clear all your doubts about the treatment!
