“I’ve Been Replaced In A Number Of Films Because I Wasn’t So-And-So’s Daughter” – Taapsee Pannu

Pallavi Manoj

Taapsee Pannu may seem fairly new in the industry not because she is new but because of all the fresh characters she has played. She’s done some roles that have blown our minds away. Take Pink or Naam Shabana. She also tried her hand at commercial films with Judwaa 2 which too proved to be a success. But the actor revealed that her journey was not a cake walk. The actress opened up during an interview with PTI that she has been passed on for roles because she didn’t have the ‘required’ connections within the industry.

The actress said,

I used the same hand to pat my back and to pick me up when I get shattered after losing out on a film due to reasons except your credibility to that role. It is not a shocker to me that a film went out of my hands, not because I was not credible, but because I was not so-and-so’s daughter or sister or dating so-and-so.

She also added that her goal is to reach a position in the industry that filmmakers will tell her that they won’t go ahead with the project without her.

I have got replaced. I am moving towards that zone where I don’t want to be a replaceable name. This is my goal. I want to hear from the industry that, ‘you are the only one who can do this, we will not go ahead with the project, if you don’t do this’…. And I want to hear from the audience that, ‘it is worth watching a film that I have done’. I am slowly heading towards that.

She also said that she is aware that no one would want to give her chances even after two or three of her films fail and this is why she feels insecure and unsafe. But she says she has accepted this.

But inspite of this, whatever little success I have achieved, it is so thrilling and exciting that it keeps me going.

She opened up about how she was more of a reaction artist than someone who can randomly act if given lines without context.

Acting is reacting. If you put a camera on me and tell me to say my lines when I don’t know the brief and someone else is giving the counter lines in a very lame way, I can’t act like this. On camera, I can do it as there is an ambiance and I have my co-actors and the director has given me the brief.

Turns out that the actress has completed 10 years in the film industry, but she says she never thought she’d stick it out for so long.

I have taken my words back. Today, it doesn’t matter what age you are, you are still the hero of the film like Sridevi ma’am. Till the time you are capable of pulling the audience to theatre, you will be around.

This talented beauty just starred in Soorma and is now gearing up for her upcoming release, Mulk.
