It’s International Beer Day today! Does anyone else notice that the best day ever just so happens to be on a Friday? Coincidence? Well, we think not! It’s definitely a sign from above for us to head out tonight and get some beer in our bellies. Well, before we get into that though, we thought that it would be interesting to go over the different types of beers that are actually out there. Well, think of this as expanding your knowledge about beer and if you already know this, read it anyway. It might give you some ideas that can help you figure out what to order tonight! So, here’s what you need to know!

Types Of Beer

1. Ales

Ales are one of the most common type of beer. They are also rather well-known around the world. The base of the beer is malted barley and most times. This type of beer also comes in a lot of varieties and a lot of fun flavours too!

2. Lagers

A lager is usually the lighter beers. By lighter, we’re referring to colour and flavour of the beer. Actually, some of the most popular beers in the world fall under this category.

3. Stouts & Porters

When it comes to a stout beer and a porter, there is not a lot that separates them. They are both thicker than the rest of the beers. They have a darker colour and an extremely rich taste. That being said, the one point of differentiation is the level of alcohol in them. While stouts have a lesser alcohol content, porters tend to be heavier and pack more of a punch.

4. Malts

A malt is one of the darker beers. That being said, they have a rather sweet flavour to them. What makes them stand out from the rest, is the hints of caramel, toffee and sometimes, even nuts that you can taste from them.

5. Pilsner

Pilsner is one of the lighter beers out there. It has a rather refreshing and crisp quality to it, which in turn makes for the perfect drink on a hot day. You can also identify it by the lighter colour of it.

6. Bock

Bock is considered an extension of the lager family. While lagers are usually lighter, a bock is stronger and sweeter. It is also considered to be a spinoff that is inspired by the darker beers.

7. Weissbier

Weissbier is actually a white beer with its distinctive quality being its sweetness. This beer is brewed in the typical Bavarian style and the reason for its sweetness is actually malted wheat! That being said, they can sometimes also be really strong.

8. Lambic

Lambic is one of the more unknown beers in the world. That being said, it is something that is enjoyed by a lot of connoisseurs because of it’s rather unique taste. The process for this beer is a spontaneous fermentation method that actually creates a rather dry and cider-like taste. It also has a really strong punch to it, so it’s safe to assume that it’s not everyone’s glass of beer.

9. Kölsch

This beer type is actually rather rare. While many argue that it falls under the lager type, it’s actually considered a standalone type. This is mostly because there are really strict brewing conditions for this beer. It has a pale and clear colour to it and has a rather hoppy taste. Well, it’s something mostly beer enthusiasts will enjoy.
