In case you’re unfamiliar with what an ambivert is, it’s basically a person who is both an introvert and an extrovert. Something that I’ve noticed over time is that people like to only check two of the boxes. Like, it’s either they are an introvert or an extrovert. To be honest, the same could be said about a lot of people I know as well. I, on the other hand, always failed to check either of the boxes. While I had my moments of being an introvert, I also had my moments of being a complete extrovert. I’ve always known what an ambivert was, however, I actually never thought my self to be one. It wasn’t until a few years ago that my light bulb finally started shining. Well, along the path of self-discovery (sort of like it), I started to realise that I’ve really got the best of both worlds. So, here are 5 things that could help explain what it means to be an ambivert.

1. I Can Choose My Moments

While introverts are usually ones who stay rather quite or in the corner, extroverts tend to be a lot more out there. For me as an ambivert, I can usually tell when it’s my moment to go for something. Whether it’s a conversation or a clap-back, I have pretty great timing. I can pick and choose my moments to shine and also only engage with people who I find truly interesting. I’m not a social butterfly, but at the same time, I’m not one to shy away from an interesting conversation or fun gathering.

2. The Ability To Introspect

The ability to introspect is something I feel is extremely essential, especially given the current lifestyles most of us live. Being able to introspect means having to confront yourself about things you may not necessarily want to or be comfortable with. I’ve found that being an ambivert has actually helped me be a lot more clear and honest with myself. I can sit in isolation and be alone with myself and my demons, confront them and then invite them out for a glass of wine as well. I’m not saying it’s only possible to do this if you’re an ambivert, but being able to confront yourself is something that is pretty hard to do. If I’m going too far, I know I can check myself and pull myself up when I fall. I’ve also learned that I care a lot less about other peoples opinions, specifically when they’re about me. So again, I can pick and choose.

3. Being Content With Things

Over the past few years, I’ve learnt how to be more content with things. Whether it’s something in my personal life or even my professional life. Don’t get me wrong though, I’m only content with the way things are because I want them to be that way. Whenever I feel I need to change something or I’m unhappy with something, I know I have the ability to change it. Sure, there are things I wish I could change faster, but I also know that there is a process to everything. So, I need to build out my path in a certain way, so as to make the change possible. But, in the meanwhile, I know I can be at peace with where I am and how I got here.

4. Small Talk & Honesty

Okay, so if there’s one thing I hate more than pineapple on my pizza, it’s having to make small talk with people. That being said, because I also possess the qualities of an extrovert, I can handle and navigate myself through the conversation pretty well. Although, I think my face and body language might give away my disinterest. Then again, it would take someone really observant to pick up on that. Another thing I’ve learnt along the way is the ability to not just be honest with myself, but others as well. I’m pretty quick with my responses and I call bulls**t when I see it. I’ve got to admit though, that does have a tendency to get me into trouble from time to time. Still, we can’t all live with our heads stuck up our a**, right?

5. The Ability To Observe & Assess Situation

Honestly, reading between the lines can sometimes be a blessing and a curse. For this part though, let’s just go with the fact that it’s a blessing. Many times, people always ask me why I’m sitting so quietly or not responding to something. The fact is, I’m usually always observing people in my surroundings. While that sounds kinda creepy, it’s actually something that has helped me understand others a lot better. Being able to look at the fine print and beyond what others can typically see, has allowed me to become a person who thinks more about the solution, rather than the problem. I understand moods, emotions and situations a lot better now and I’m sure, it only gets better from there. Also, this gives me the fun ability to be able to look through all the BS that is being served my way.

Well, so there you have it! Now you know a little bit more about me. Well, probably not what you wanted to, but then again, I do have some characteristics of an introvert! Also, before I end, can I just say that if you ever see me or meet me, feel free to come up and talk! I know it may seem like I’m really hostile, but I’m actually not. I just have a resting b**ch face! Also, don’t leave your brains at home ;)!
