Wikipedia defines conspiracy theories as, ‘An explanation of an event or situation that invokes a conspiracy—generally, one involving an illegal or harmful act supposedly carried out by the government or other powerful actors—without credible evidence’. They’re fun to analyse and hence are a guilty pleasure for most of us. However, at the end of the day, they’re only theories and don’t have enough proof to always be taken seriously. Here are some of our favourite conspiracy theories that range from mind-blowing to downright creepy.

1. The Mandela Effect

The Mandela Effect supposedly provides evidence of having experienced events/situations from a different or alternate reality. What is mind-blowing about this conspiracy is that thousands, if not more, have had the same memory about a certain event that never took place in ‘this’ reality. For instance, in the Snow White movie, most of us remember the evil queen famously saying ‘Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all?’, right? Well, in fact, she never says ‘mirror, mirror’, instead, she says ‘magic mirror’. Weird, right?

2. The Avril Lavigne Conspiracy

The Avril Lavigne conspiracy believes that the real Avril Lavigne is dead and was replaced by her look-alike, Melissa in 2003. The conspiracy goes back to when she initially struggled with fame and hired a body double to take some of the spotlight away from her. At some point during all of this, Avril is believed to have died and been replaced full-time by her body double, Melissa. This was done to protect Avril’s brand image, as she had been doing very well at the time. Conspiracy theorists also noticed a change in Avril’s way of dressing and music style. However, the biggest supporting claim to this conspiracy is her birthmarks. Avril’s birthmarks suddenly disappeared, as obviously, ‘Melissa’ does not have Avril’s birthmarks, making us think that the real Avril Lavigne may have actually been replaced by a body double.

3. The Titanic Conspiracy

The Titanic conspiracy came into being because of the 3 passengers who were actually on board when the ship sunk. These 3 passengers were against the establishment of the Federal Reserve Bank. With their deaths in the shipwreck, the opposition was removed and the Federal Reserve Bank was established in the following year, 1913. This has led conspiracy theorists to believe that the Titanic sinking was not an accident, but a deliberate attempt to sink the ship in order to remove the opposition that served as an obstacle.

4. Project MKUltra

Project MKUltra was an actual mind control program, where various humans were experimented on with hallucinogenic drugs by the CIA of the United States. This disturbing project included hypnosis, drugs and sensory deprivation. The aim of this project was to weaken an individual’s mind so that there is an increased dependency on others, to lower their ambition and make them come across as stupid or crazy, which would ultimately discredit them in the eyes of the general public. Although these experiments were supposedly stopped in the 1970s, conspiracy theorists believe that the government is still conducting these mind control experiments on famous celebrities. This is done in order to treat them as puppets in front of the media. During Amanda Bynes‘ breakdown in 2013, she claimed that there was a microchip implanted in her head, which only fueled this conspiracy further.

5. The Government & Aliens

This conspiracy claims that the Government of USA has known about the existence of aliens for a long time and have even been in contact with them. In fact, many ex-government officials have come out with these claims themselves. From all the claims, conspiracy theorists have identified at least 2 species of aliens- the tall whites and the greys. The greys are described to be 3-4 feet tall with black almond eyes and no ears, whereas the whites have been described to be 6-10 feet tall, with piercing black or blue eyes and thin white hair. Spooky, right?
