3 Clever Ways To Find Out Your Skin’s Undertone

Eesha Kokane

If I got a penny for every time I bought a foundation that didn’t suit me, I’d be able to buy the damn foundation company. I’ve always wondered why my foundation (or even lipsticks for that matter) didn’t fit my skin. After flipping through tons of beauty magazines and watching endless youtube videos, I finally found the culprit—undertones. If your makeup always ends up looking odd, then it’s probably because it doesn’t match your undertone. There are the 3 main types and they’re as follows:

  • Warm
  • Cool
  • Neutral

These 3 clever ways will help you find your undertone, so the next time you go shopping for makeup you’ll be 100% sure what to buy.

1. Gold vs Silver Jewellery

A really simple way to identify your undertone is observing what kind of jewellery looks good you. If you think that gold jewellery looks better on you, then you have a warm undertone. If you think that silver jewellery looks better on you, then you have a cool undertone and if you think you look great in both silver and gold jewellery, then you have a neutral undertone. However, this method is very subjective, so if you want a method that’ll give you clear results, try out the next one.

2. Blue vs Green Veins

This is probably the best method as is not as subjective in comparison to the other methods. All you have to do is observe the colour of your veins in your wrist. Take a close look at them in natural light. If they appear to be hues of purple and blue, then you have a cool undertone. Whereas if they appear to be hues of green or olive, then you have a warm undertone. If your veins appear to a mix of both the colours, then you have a neutral undertone.

3. White vs Off-White Clothes

The next time you play dress-up, try out different shades of white. If you think off-white suits you then you have a warm undertone, whereas if you think white suits you better you have a cool one. If white and off-white both look good on you, then you have a neutral undertone. Make sure you do this method in natural lighting so that you can clearly do the assessment.
