Skincare Ingredients

There is a plethora of different kinds of skincare products out there. It can get super confusing to find something that works for you. Trial and error is a good way to find out what works for your skin, but it can often cost you an arm and a leg and worse—it can mess with your skin. It may seem like a good idea to experiment with different skincare products, but there are certain skincare ingredients that you should never mix together. Here are a few a skincare ingredients that you should never use together (prepare to be surprised):

1. Acne Treatments & Chemical Exfoliants

Both of these skincare categories have wonderful and potent ingredients, although when you mix these skincare ingredients together, it can cause more harm than good.

  • Acne Treatments: Ingredients like Benzoyl Peroxide and Salicylic Acid.
  • Chemical Exfoliants: Ingredients like AHAs (glycolic acid, lactic acid etc.) and BHAs

If you mix these ingredients together, you’ll feel a burning sensation and it’ll cause inflammation. Hence, it’s important to remember never to use these skincare ingredients together.

Solution: If you love both these ingredients and you still want to use them, you can alternate the days of the use.

2. Acne Treatments & Retinol

  • Acne Treatments: Ingredients like Benzoyl Peroxide and Salicylic Acid.
  • Retinol: This skincare ingredient is made from Vitamin A and it’s often included in anti-ageing creams.

When you use salicylic acid with retinol your skin can become dry and flaky. However, when you use benzoyl peroxide with retinol, both these ingredients will cancel out each other’s effect. Hence, save your time and money and don’t use these skincare products together.

3. Vitamin C & AHAs

  • Vitamin C: Also known as ascorbic acid. It contains antioxidant properties and it helps fade dark spots and blemishes.
  • AHAs: Ingredients like glycolic acid, lactic acid, citric acid etc.

If these two skincare ingredients are used together, they can irritate your skin and cause inflammation.

Solution: You can use these skincare ingredients during different times of the day. Since AHAs make your skin sensitive to the sun, it’s better to use products with AHA during your nighttime routine.

4. Physical & Chemical Exfoliants

  • Physical Exfoliant: Any skincare product that has texture is a physical exfoliant. For example, apricot scrubs, dry brushes and spin brushes are physical exfoliants.
  • Chemical Exfoliants: Skincare ingredients like AHAs (glycolic acid, lactic acid etc.) and BHAs

Over exfoliation can cause microscopic tears, hence you should never use both types of exfoliators together.
