Each time Sonam Kapoor Ahuja is papped I am ready with my note pad to jot down brands, styles and silhouettes she’s wearing. Cause, let’s face it, she is always bringing something new to the table. This time around, her look reminded me of just how important it is to invest in good desi wear. To celebrate Raksha Bandhan with her family, Sonam was seen in a bright, beautiful Anamika Khanna ensemble that fit the bill for this ocassion (and could for several others—which is why I loved it!) She wore a full-sleeved blouse, palazzo pants with a dupatta in a bright yellow hue.

Sonam’s look checked all the boxes for a trendy, chic desi look but also counted as one of those outfits that one could mix up and wear again and again. I dove deep into just how versatile her look is and broke it down so we all could shop smarter! If you’re like me and love Indianwear but hardly ever get the chance to wear it—make sure that you keep the following in mind when you want to invest in desi wear:

1) Silhouettes Matter

Whether a lehengacholi, saree or salwar suit set—pick a silhouette that is classic to make sure that you can wear it time and time again. This will ensure that your outfit isn’t confined to a particular trend, or season but rather something that will make a statement whether you wear it in 2019 or 2029.

2) Separates FTW

One amazing thing about Indianwear is how versatile it is by nature. So whether you pick up a kurtagharara combo, dhoti pants or a cape or even an anarkali set—each piece from these sets could be styled differently to make a whole new look. Hence, whenever you go shopping do remember to see how individual pieces could also work in your favour to create new styles.

3) Colour Story

When I saw Sonam Kapoor’s look, I could immediately think of four other occassions I could wear that colour to—from a mehendi to an engagement party or even a family lunch. Bright colours like, canary yellow, rani pink, and even teal contribute to making your look statement-worthy and ones that need minimal accessorising.
