As strange as it sounds, I have to mention that every time I use an eyelash curler I burst out laughing; it’s because I remember the way Mayim Bialik described an eyelash curler on The Big Bang Theory—”It looks like something used by Tinker Bell’s gynaecologist”. This is a strange-looking yet very effective tool you can use to enhance your eyelashes. Since it’s weirdly shaped and frankly a bit terrifying, I was very sceptical to use it at first. However, after I got the hang of it, I can’t go a day without curling my lashes. If you’re new to curling your eyelashes, then you’re in the right place. While you are learning how to use it, here are 7 mistakes you should avoid making:

1. You’re Curling Your Lashes After Doing Your Makeup

This mistake is probably done by all the beauty noobs. Curling your eyelashes after doing your makeup, may seem like the correct thing to do but it actually isn’t. When you use an eyelash curler after you’re done applying your eyeliner and eyeshadow, you may smudge all your hard work. So think of curling your eyelashes as the very first step of your makeup routine. Trust me, if you do this, your eye makeup will be on fleek.

2. You’re Not Heating It Up

Think of it this way—you wouldn’t be able to curl your hair with a curling iron that doesn’t heat up, would you? Hence, you should also apply heat to your eyelash curler before you use it. Take your hairdryer and blow some hot air onto the metal part of the curler. Make sure that the metal is no too hot. After you’ve heated it up you’ll be good to go.

3. You’re Not Cleaning It

As a rule of thumb, you have to remember that if something is going to touch your eye, it has to be clean. So you should remember to clean your eyelash curler religiously. You should be cleaning the rubber cushion and the metallic part of your eyelash curler at least once a month. Take a cotton pad with some micellar water on it to clean your eyelash curler.

4. You’re Not Replacing The Pads

Those little rubber or silicone pads on your eyelash curler tend to wear out and they have to be replaced every few months. When you notice these pads becoming thinner and stickier, it’s a sign that you should replace it. If you neglect to do this, then you might damage your eyelashes, every time you use your curler.

5. You’re Not Curling At The Root

When you use an eyelash curler, it’s super important that you place the rubber pad of the eyelash curler near the roots of your lashes. Doing this helps you give your lashes a better life and it’ll prevent the plucking of eyelashes. Although make sure that you don’t hold your curler too close to your eyelid if you’re not careful then you may pinch your skin and no one wants that.

6. You’re Using Cheap Curlers

I get the urge to save money whenever it’s possible, but trust me when I say this, spend your money on a good quality eyelash curler. When it comes to your eyes, don’t skimp out. Make it a point to buy good quality and ophthalmologically tested eye makeup and eyelash curlers. If you use cheap quality curler then chances are that rubber pads won’t be durable and you won’t be able to get a good grip and a lift.
