One thing that I’ve learnt after watching countless skincare related YouTube videos is that you should always invest in a good serum. Skincare expert, Susan Yara, has stressed on this fact multiple times in her videos and I have to say that I agree with her. Earlier, I used to believe that using a serum was expensive and unnecessary. However, now even though serums still retail at exorbitant prices, I think that investing in a good serum suitable for your skin type is essential. Here are some benefits of using a serum:

  • Since they have a lighter consistency, they can penetrate deeper into the skin and hence hydrate the skin better than a moisturiser would.
  • Serums usually have a high concentration of active ingredients and that’s why they are great to address specific skin concerns.
  • Over time, they can improve the skin’s moisture barrier and texture.

So if you’re tempted to buy a serum suitable for your skin type, here’s what you should keep in mind:

Dry Skin

If your skin type is dry then look for serums with hyaluronic acid or sodium hyaluronate. These ingredients are humectants, AKA moisture magnets. They will keep your skin hydrated for a longer time by drawing moisture from the air. This serum contains antioxidants and hyaluronic acid among other wonderful ingredients. It helps repair, hydrate and rejuvenate your skin.

Oily & Combination Skin

If your skin type is oily or combination, then try using an exfoliating serum. Since your skin produces excess sebum, chances are your pores might get clogged. That’s why an exfoliating serum will help. This serum contains lactic acid which is a gentle exfoliating ingredient which will help remove dead skin cells. It also contains hyaluronic acid which helps hydrate your skin.

Blemished Skin

If you have to deal with acne scars of hyperpigmentation, then look for a serum that contains vitamin C. Vitamin C or L-ascorbic acid is a brightening ingredient and it helps fade scars. Since this serum contains vitamin C, E and ferulic acid, it will firm and brighten your skin. It helps you fade dark spots, redness and sun-damage.

Sensitive Skin

If you have sensitive skin, then look for a serum with gentle ingredients like niacinamide. Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3 and it gently brightens and regulates the oil production of the skin.
